The Moe thread

Hello Lag from Greg Lavern
Sorry for not replying for a while as i had some radio and Televison interviews to deal with and have been hitting the
ball very pure in seclusion all by my lonesome. I wish you well and i will be intouch with you.
I will gladly respond to this article and provide the actual learned from the master rather then the assumed of these promoters of Moe’s golf swing who’s observations are totally wrong.
The Real Moe Norman started with the golf club 14’’ behind the golf ball as his starting point that allowed the clubhead to get very deep and create great width. First of all on the backswing the swing starts from the left instep rolling inward while the left arm extends back along the chest. When the transition takes place as i revealed in The Real Moe Norman book the vertical drop if you will is performed properly when the left palm goes to the right heel. Moe wanted the clubhead to lag behind him feeling the weight of the club head and wanted to know where it always was in the backswing.

The rotation of the hips and shoulders on the backswing put The Real Moe Norman into position to make an effective vertical drop. This allowed him to drop the club on a entirely different plane to become lower through the hitting area. Of course Moe wanted the club behind him to continue with the horizontal tug. Who ever wrote this article does not have a clue what Moe did with such foolish comments.

The left wrist remaind bowed through impact and up the line to completion of the finish keeping the face square in a pendulem fashion so the the left thumb never hitchikes. The shoulders still have to rotate on their own accord from the natural clearance of the leftside that enables the clubhead to return back on plane.

The Real Moe Norman’s shaft on his transition would come close to his neck and very close to hitting his right foot from the lag he created as demonstrated in some of the photos displayed on this thread. The clubhead was always behind Moe with great seperation of the left and right knee in a sitting position that Lawson Mitchell the other author described as the batters box in The Real Moe Norman book.

The wall mentioned in this article had nothing to do with the club going behind Moe. The wall The Real Moe Norman use to mention was for the purposes of his left arm and bowed left wrist riding the line never hitchiking so he would never hit the wall. Make no mistake The Real Moe Norman wanted the clubhead deep behind him creating great lead and lag.

As for hinging on the backswing in a artifical manner as expressed in this artical. NO. When the left arm goes across the chest on the backswing the right elbow or trail arm automaticly folds. When the vertical drop takes place the right elbow leads as a result of the left arm pushing downward directing the left palm to the right heel. You are in sequence to hit the golf ball with the (shaft) so naturally the hands will lead ahead of the club head. The Real Moe Norman use to describe it to me as retaining the angle beyond impact as the club head will always catch up to square as you hit through the ball not to it.

The Real Moe Norman’s golf swing is based on the proper sequence of motion that creates maxium speed at impact and beyond by swinging with yourself by hitting your positions. I have noticed this article does not come even close to what Moe does. How could these Moe Norman promoters say such trash if they really understood what The Real Moe Norman actually did in his swing? After reading this article I can tell you the writer like the golf channel instructors dont know where pendulem is or how to get there. I do with confidence from The Real Moe Norman’s final secret to me.

I apoligize but i still have 50% more knowledge beyond the first book that i would like to reveal in a second book as an advanced edition. This book will provide unknown insight on The Real Moe Norman’s ball flight of his pure straight strike and Ben Hogan’s unrevealed famous secret.

Thank you

Good stuff PureSpice. Have a question that I hope isn’t inappropriate for a forum, or to ask you.

Without going into specific detail, can you offer any insight as to what Mr. Norman was like in his private moments. For instance, did his speech pattern change when in the privacy of this own home. Were his living quarters neat and orderly or somewhat disheveled? Were his mannerisms any different at night than during the day. Just curious about these things as I have heard numerous accounts and descriptions of him.

Hope I haven’t intruded on special boundries here…just curious about a special man. If so, sorry and please disregard!

Shaft behind the back & bouncing off back of the neck / hands in right pocket / clubhead hitting right foot – from the man himself…

I’m glad nobody wants to write a book about me…yet! :open_mouth:

When the Real Moe Norman was in his comfort zone with Lawson Mitchell , myself or friends of his inner circle he was always calm, articulate about the golf swing and jolly in conversation. Moe would not repeat things as often and would as this only happen if really excited or irritated. He lived in a rooming house in Richmond Hill Ontario and also roomed in the same place as I did at Ryles Inn in Ormond Beach Florida for years. Living quarters was basicly a place to sleep and watch TV . Moe had most of his golf attire in his car but also had golf shirts and pants hung up neatly. The lonely time for The Real Moe Norman was after the golf course closed or heading home after a car drive listening to golf tapes on the mind. Moe liked soft music particularly driving to a tournament as it relaxes the mind for greater concentration. I spent lots of time eating dinner with him and at the bowling alley after a day’s golf in Ormond Beach Flordia. The day ended and tomorrow was another day at the golf course always hoping for sun and if it rained he would read or maybe travel to have some shafts replaced or work done on his clubs.

Nice post , i think this is clear evidence that backs up my post that the article written by these Moe Norman opportunists is totaly false and the wrong information. Most of the things Moe talks about in that video i still work on even today when i seriously practice as these positions are ingraved in my mind and muscle memory from many years of instruction and hard work with my buddy The Real Moe Norman.

The Real Moe Norman told me to become good freinds with my driver, wedge and putter. These were the clubs he would spend his down time with getting feel while relaxing watching TV in his room. Moe could not wait to get out hitting balls the next day and new he was going to hit it good or make his rounds to local golf courses to say hi to some of his golf buddies that always let him hang around.

The Real Moe Norman was always thinking of golf and wanted to reach his full potential striking the ball. He also liked other sports and loved to talk golf to me after we practiced or played to go over progress and where improvement could be made.
Moe, would say to me, " pal you can always get better and you never stop learning."

Trust was a big thing with The Real Moe Norman and he trusted both Lawson Mitchell and myself with his golf swing as we new what to look for and of course trust of knowing we would never do him harm and count on us under any situation. The Real Moe Norman was a man of integrity and a realist that was demonstrated in his nature daily on the golf course and during his social time.

I can honestly say The Real Moe Norman and myself never got in an arguement and we joked and were serious when required. When in his comfort zone he was delightful and always helpful. I know Moe appreciated my dedication and hardwork staying steadfast to his methods. He was very appreciative and would make suggestions to me and tell me anything i asked him about the golf swing. The Real Moe Norman was always awesome to me.

Thanks hope this helps Captain.

The Real Moe Norman would set the club head 14 inches behind the ball and the top of the left shoulder at the target with his right arm lower than the left. His stance wider than shoulder width with weight on the heels. Lots of rotation of the hips and shoulders on the backswing. This allows the clubhead to get to the inside in positon to make the vertical drop.
The transition a result of weight transfer takes place from right to left causing a change of direction with the left palm and arm in a lever action pushing down toward the right heel. The left knee moves at the target and the right instep goes down.
This sets up the pre-impact position which Lag Erickson agrees is one of the most important components in The Real Moe Norman’s golf swing. Impact into the golf ball just happens with the left arm and shaft as one straight line with the left wrist continuing in a bowed position beyond impact maintaning a square club face low and long. The horizonal tug continues if you don’t release at the ball and release much later forming an extention down the line that results in the right hand never crossing over the left with no twisting or turning of the shoulders pre- maturely. The shoulders rotate way late as The Real Moe Norman’s right hand and thumb points to the flag stick. A further extention of the club head goes to the sky from a desire to be target oriented in perfect balance with the stomach facing the target on it’s own accord. These componets are all included in the proper sequence of motion as an entire package.

I respect Lag John Erickson for his knowledge and ability of knowing real greatness in the golf swing particularly in The Real Moe Norman’s golf swing that many world class golf pros over look because they just dont know only think they know.

I never changed from the Real Moe Norman’s teachings to me. Why would i when i had the best teacher in the world and greatest ball striker that ever lived in my opinion. From my experience with The Real Moe Norman I am confident day in and day out he was better than Ben Hogan. Granted, i never seen Ben Hogan hit the ball though Lawson Mitchell did who also has great respect for Ben Hogan. I once asked Moe straight out," who is better Ben Hogan or yourself?" Moe answered with a smile, " I AM." Out of respect for both great ball strikers who passed away there is much that can be learned from both men. I am alive and very fortune to have the insight and knowledge on these similar methods of how to hit the golf ball through purtiy of technique. Through hardwork and trial and error i adopted to the Real Moe Norman’s method who had great respect for Ben Hogan, Lee Trevino and George Knudson with regard to the way each struck the ball pure in their own individual way. Like anything that is great it takes dedication and knowledge that The Real Moe Norman provided to me. Both The Real Moe Norman and Lawson Mitchell have been a great influence on my advanced ball striking where Lawson introduced me to Moe in 1974.

At 55 years of age i still swing E3 irons and an E5 driver since both Moe and myself believed in mass over velocity through the proper squence of motion creating maximum speed at imact. I have have achieved The Real Moe Norman’s incredible flight which took me along time as this does not happen over night. I have been working on flight during my practice sessions as The Real Moe Norman ingraved in me that “flight tells all.” For anyone that has seen The Real Moe Norman strike the golf ball or Lag Erickson who has played and practiced with The Real Moe Norman during his Canadian Tour days would appreciate this.

Thank You
Greg

The Real Moe Norman probably drank twenty cokes on a hot day. I remember he changed sometimes to diet pepsi but usually had a coke in his hand. The smaller bottles of coke gave you a feeling of high from the original harsh coke.
The Real Moe Norman never drank booze in his life only high on coca cola.
I use to like rum in my coke when i was young and playing the night tour though i found out quickly hitting 800 balls with The Real Moe Norman was hard on the head. ha ha.

Hello John Lag Erickson and Forum Students

From Greg Lavern co-author The Real Moe Norman Book and best pupil taught personally from the Real Moe Norman many years in Canada and the United States.

I think it fair to say that The Real Moe Norman taught me for many years and became the one person above the rest that The Real Moe Norman gave his entire knowledge and taught me his moves for many years when we practiced golf as closest friends and both dedicated to the game of golf.

My close buddy during our last conversation when Moe came to visit me at Belvedere G.C. in Prince Edward Island he expressed, " so pal now you should be smart enough to write a book on what i taught you, I told you everything I know."

It appears Todd Graves is trying to stop the continuation of the best book out on the market we continue to call The Real Moe Norman as our way of telling the truth of the man and his golf swing with honourable intentions to clear up all the misconceptions and false observations. Todd Graves ridiculous imaturity is demonstrated in an attempt to stop any further sale of the book The Real Moe Norman or any projects Lawson Mitchell or myself try to do including teaching golf.

The funny thing is this foolish arrogant individual accuses me of teaching the single plane golf swing . Not interested in his teaching method or Natural Golf’s as either have a clue as far as i am concerned. Yes a bold statement, but time to speak out as stand strong on what knowledge i was provided by the Real Moe Norman that is a entirely different golf swing then what Natural Golf and the Graves Academy are promoting. The reason, " they just dont know, they only think they do."

I learned from The Real Moe Norman during the 70’s and 80’s and the other author of our book Lawson Mitchell introduced me to The Real Moe Norman in 1974 where Lawson’s friendship and private instruction goes back to 1961 while the assistant pro at Tamoko Oaks. I would think Todd Graves would still be in diapers or could be before his exsistance.

To state my position he does not have a case with any merit. I will continue with the Real Moe Norman book as it is about to gain great momentum, authoring and writing a second book as i have 75% knowledge not revealed yet for an advanced edition for golfers and students with the desire to reach their full potential as a ballstriker. I will continue to teach, demonstrate and swing the way The Real Moe Norman taught me. The golf swing both Lawson Mitchell and myself learned is the superior golf swing much different then the teachings by Natural Golf and the Graves Academy. The Real Moe Norman used the golfswing Lawson and I were introduced to when winning many tournaments and being recognized as the greatest ball striker in the world.

I can assure the golf community that my knowledge is miles beyond anything Natural Golf or the Graves Academy could teach me as i had two teachers Lawson Mitchell and The Real Moe Norman and i never changed.
If Todd Graves would stop chasing me with lawyers then maybe i might teach him some things that would benefit him and his students. Sad, some people foolishly resort to greed and now i know why the Real Moe Norman never told Todd Graves or Natural Golf anything of importance. In the mean time Todd Graves showed read the book The Real Moe Norman.

Anyhoo! I will continue to promote the golf swing The Real Moe Norman taught Lawson Mitchell and myself. I have every right to promote the Incredible knowledge and golfswing incorporated in my mind and body by The Real Moe Norman that no one can take away.

Thank you

Good work here Greg. As I have said before, Greg does the best job of demonstrating Moe’s fundamentals and protocols right in his own swing. Slotting the club nicely, you can see Greg’s right elbow tucked under coming into P3. The foot and leg work are fantastic. Notice how solid and bracing the left knee aiding in preserving ground pressures for the torso rotation to leverage off. Right arm is nicely saved post impact showing that things are working properly with the release and Greg is not just slapping the arms at the ball. Greg’s swinging a very stiffly tipped persimmon that weighs just under 16 ounces. It’s a small compact head just as Moe liked them. 7 degrees of loft. How do I know? I built the club! :sunglasses:

Keep up the good work!
