Those Spalding Top Flite woods were made from 73 - 76. Laminated with the 2 firing pins… looked like they were trying to get innovative.
Don’t know anything about the Ralston.
Those Mac irons look sweet, but I don’t know anything about that model. The have the same muscle “look” that the MT designs did from the 70’s.
Is that an “070” on the back toe of the club?
Cheers Lads… lots of good looking clubs being picked up. That PB is pretty sweet, Bent…
I don’t know how you guys keep up with all the Hogans- for some reason my searching never seems to come up with many… not even slightly jealous
Here are some MacGregor MT M85 Colokroms (1-PW with TT Dynamic stiff shafts) that arrived recently from the US - thanks to FreddieC for helping as always! These are a remake of the 50’s copper faced classic which I think Papi and others are lucky enough to own. I think the remake is from around 1984. These are basically unhit but have some heat damage / oxidisation on a couple of clubfaces (in the form of the black line you can see) which dramatically reduced the auction price to under $100. Anyone has any suggestions for appropriate cleaning materials? I have read that Stainless Steel and Aluminium cleaners would probably do the job but might lighten the copper. Other suggestions include toothpaste!
Good gosh Arnie… when did you get these? I must have been in one of my “no-more-ebay” moods when you snagged this set… they look great!
Not sure how to clean them up - are there commercial copper cleaners available? It seems like the copper faces would oxidize over time anyway unless you hit em with a light coating of lacquer. Are these for display only? I’d have a hard time not putting those beauties in play.
I picked them up a couple of months ago but they took a while to get over here. I will probably give them a slap soon, I don’t really buy them just to look at, lovely though they are. There are some on ebay now -
And thanks to Lag I managed to pick up a set of original 50’s M85s (2-DS wedge) with stiff True Temper Tourney shafts on my recent trp to SF. I havn’t taken many pics yet but here are comparison shots with the 2 80’s remake models.
So on the original the toe is more rounded, the hosel longer and there is a much thicker top line. Interesting about thin and thick top lines. I actually now, after lots of trial and error, prefer a thick top line in a blade. To me blades come in two basic varieties - A. scalpels/knives or B. clubs/hammers. Personally I have come to love blades that match the latter description and feel and look as if they have lots of mass to blast the ball.
I had a closer look in the Kaplan MacGregor catalogue I have and these look very similar to a 1969 personal model (same styling on the back though the pic I have is of a ladies version) sold through retail chains such as dept stores rather than professional shops. That date would explain the leather grips as well. No reason to think that they wouldn’t play well though.
Thanks Robbo. I got the Spalding because it looked pretty funky and in good condition plus I have a thing for 4 woods. There was a Ralston Wedge on ebay a while back where the seller described it as circa 1940’s but other than that I can’t find any info on it. As for the MacGregors, the number is 070 which at first I thought was a limited edition type reference number but I found a post on GolfWrx from someone else asking for information about these irons and his has the same number. So then I thought it might be the release year 1970 but I doubt it because they would have just stamped 1970 right? In any case it has that 70’s blade look so I’m hoping it’s from the 1970-1983 era. It really doesn’t make a difference to me either way but I enjoy knowing the history of these things.
Thanks AA, that’s excellent and pretty much confirms that they are from the early 70’s (probably even 1970 which could explain 070). The fact that they were dept store clubs doesn’t really concern me because they are bound to be better that any of the off the reack modern day clubs anyway. I’m interested to see how they play. My next set however is going to be a set of Wilson Staff Dyna-Power’s…no more getting side tracked

thanks to FreddieC for helping as always!
Arnie, your welcome. Those M85 irons are something else. I enjoyed testing out a few of your non copper irons on the range this summer. Solid!! Enjoy them!
Hi Anthgolf - I read in a recent article that it took MacGregor until 1974 to finally introduce a cast set. I think yours are a little earlier than that so will be forged.
