Those Hogan Apex came in today… they are unbelievable!! I actually feel like I’m holding a golf club in my hands for the first time in 15 years. Clean heads with basically no bounce, and a meaty weight to them. The shafts feel a touch soft at #4 but I’ll wait on judgement til I go play a bit with them. There’s no groove wear at all and just a couple of leading edge dings that are below the line so nothing is affecting the faces. They even have the old original grips with the bottom cuff on them and they still have some life to them amazingly enough- there the 73-78 model so they’ve been around for a while. It’s just ridiculous that these things cost $30 plus $20 for shipping. They might be the best looking blade I’ve ever seen…
Bom,
Those are true classics. One of my personal favorite sets. I bought a used set of those in the same condition in 1986 and used them very briefly. Sidelined them because they were a bit too upright for me. Great pick up! They are also on my want list. Someday…
I played today with my 1953, 945 Tommy Armour Silver Scots… had a really nice day striking the irons hitting 14 greens under pretty tough wet conditions for a 71 with three 3 wipes. I just love looking down at those muscle backs… and the thick top line just makes you feel there is some mass attack going on.
Last week I reworked the lies and figured out a way to bend them on my machine to get rid of any offset that occurred from bumping them a little strong. Now they all have just a hint of face progression, and it makes it a lot easier to work the ball better with the new balls that I am not really all that in love with.
I like the leading edge to be right on the shaft line visually, if not just a hint ahead, and that is why I love my 62 Haig Ultras so much, because they really have that face progression look. I can’t draw the ball well with off set irons, but the way they are set up now, I feel I can do anything with the ball with nice precision. The only greens I missed were due to drives that went right from my foot slipping a bit on the soggy tee boxes. I hadn’t played the 945’s in a long time, as I just wasn’t happy with how they were setting… but now they are spot on…
A friend of my dad’s that I play golf with on Saturdays saw my 63 Hogan IPT’s and told me he would give me his Haig Ultras for free. I haven’t seen them yet, but he said he knows they are from the 60’s, he couldn’t remember if they were 62 Haig Ultras or 66 Haig Ultras. But FREE sounds great to me, either way.
I played with Al Barkow today, and he said that back in the day, the Haig’s were the premiere release by Wilson. They were very expensive to buy new, much more than the Dyna series, and if you saw a set of Haig’s in a bag it just screamed “player”.
1966 Macgregor DX 2-9 + SW and Cleveland Classic Persimmon 1, 3, 5. The Macgregors look so nice in a bag, almost too nice to play with, as they are practically unhit from what I can tell.
I was looking for one more set of Hogans from pre-1970 for relatively cheap as I plan on getting my '63 IPT’s bent to 4* flat (my shafts are -1/2") and wanted another set to fool around with. I also wanted to get a driver that was affordable. I came away with this set of Power Thrust’s 3-9 and Hogan 1,3,5 wood. All for $100 that includes shipping. I’ll probably get a set of Apex PC’s or Redlines a few months from now.
Nice find R3J
They are very simillar to the bounce soles (which I just purchased a second set of). The woods however probably are Laminates and not worth the trouble of flattening. I tried to do a driver. The laminated wood is not very good at being altered or manipulated (just breaks into long filaments).
I tried to get some of the bounce sole 1+, but kept getting out-bid. I think I just want the driver re-finished. Not all too concerned with flattening because when I go with a ‘gamer’ driver it’s going to be more upright because it’s titanium. I would like to get it refinished.
