Since I have the Redlines (bent down to 4 and probably my favorite blades) your groove question got me wondering. What I found on golfwrx, and the guy might be blowing smoke, was that the 1988’s were square and the 89’s were not. Also have a set of cameos and they also hold their own Hoganwise.

Flop

As far as I know the grooves only effect the tours, not sure about amateur or even open USGA events, haven’t had any reason to check but it’s a good question.

L,

Interesting… perhaps your take on the CB’s is the same reason you don’t see many around.

You and Flopshot are peaking my interest in the Redlines (Apex)… how do you think they compare to the PC’s (my favorite with the experience I have with Hogans which is limited compared to you)?

As an aside, I know a guy who knows some of the shop pros who were at Shady Oaks when Hogan was there. Apparently when Hogan started producing more of the extreme cavity back designs, some of the assistants and pro’s went out of their way to get the displays with these CB designs prominently set up and looking “just right”. Hogan came in one day and told them to move all those clubs to the backroom saying something to the effect of “I know we have to make these, but it doesn’t mean I have to look at em!” When a customer would come in and inquire about those CB designs they’d have to go to the back to get them.

Flop,

I heard the same thing about the 88 design.

I had always assumed the groove thing would be a bit more straight-forward than it’s starting to appear. Did a quick scan of the USGA website and it looks like they’re starting to get a db put together, however a quick search of some Hogan iron designs indicates it has a long way to go:

A good friend of mine, Marty Davis had a set of PC’s for eons that he absolutely swore by. I played them a few times and it was hard to really tell since our specs were very different. He played a stiffer shaft and way stronger lofts and more upright so the little bit that I could tell was that I found them a much longer and thinner blade than mine. It felt kind of tinny not quite as solid and a lot of torque in my hands when I hit them a little on the toe, which was a lot since the sweetspot was more toward the socket than mine. The shaft I know was a lot of it, it was a #5 tipped a club vs my S400’s tipped 2 clubs. More than that is just personal preferance, most tell me mine sit open, kinda fanned but I think they’re money.

So much of it is just what trips the switch, what your eyes tell your brain is right. After hitting a lot of different clubs I know what I like, small compact blade irons with a pretty square toe and a touch of offset, huge round wedge heads with dead straight leading edges and small fairway woods cranked way open with sharp leading edges that sit almost underground. Doesn’t mean anything except that’s what gives my eye positive reinforcement and comfort.

The same place I was looking about grooves had a consensus that the PC’s and Redlines were the pick of the Hogan litter. As one poster said —they are the apex of the apexes.

L and Flop,

Thanks for the info. It’s always a bit frustrating when discussing the older irons to be unable to run over to the local big-box golf store to look at them in the flesh.

I really do like my PC’s and many of the other older sets I’ve picked up, but one thing that I haven’t been able to find is something a bit more compact (which makes me want to get a look at the Redline up close). I always thought the older Macs were pretty compact blades but the MT Split Soles I picked up were larger than I expected. I think a misconception many have about the muscle back stuff is that they’re really tiny heads. I think it’s the thinner toplines and less offset that makes many people look at them and declare them “unhittable”.

Somehow this didn’t sell first time around at this price and has been relisted. Looks solid and has a good shaft…

Somebody pay attention to that Hogan Driver, 6-screw Hogans are pretty rare these days.

I don’t know much about this model Tourney, or what shafts are in these, but 4 decent persimmons for $12 is pretty tough to beat… $12 for the headcovers alone seems like a pretty good deal

I am sooo all over these…

BomGolf222 is my newest best friend…thanks for the tip buddy, I never would have seen them…12 bucks
was the final price!! Indeed I need some covers as well!! they look like 1966 vintage and in pretty good shape—hell, for that price the shape doesnt matter
and maybe Ill spend more time in the "refinishing " thread!

Good stuff…I saw that that Hogan also went- for a mere $9.95… I hope that was one of our guys… what a world we live in where you can get those 5 clubs for about 20 bucks, and the cheapest in season frying pan(as Lag calls them) that you can get is about $400-$500… Plus the shaft is nothing like the shaft that the tour guys use bar the paint job. And I reckon you get to watch about 85% of that money running around on the TV during commercial breaks… :unamused: verging on :smiling_imp:
I suppose that all makes it better for the likes of us who can pick up all this gear for deals… see, a silver lining
Cheers,
BOM

they need to be here!

the thought you could get a set like this delivered to your door for under $200 is insane. Never been hit… 1 iron through SW.

WITH X100 shafts!

goodness…

I was lucky to get the Hogan! Thanks for the heads up from you , and to LCVD for pointing out the “6 screw” feature. I received it yesterday, looks in OK condition, ( has a small repairable divot near the speed slot…can’t see from address position), Apex 4 shaft.

nice Wilson set from 1987/88- don’t know what flex the shafts are

I might go for one of those Wilson Dyna sets…US$112 shipping to Oz is a bit rich though. What kind of shaft is X-100?

I wish some of these US ebayers would post to Australia. I’ve seen Wilson Dyna’s and Macgregor MT2’s go for like US$30 in the past few weeks but none of these guys was interested in positng to Oz. Those that do post to Australia usually charge more than what they are selling the clubs for, the last set I got sent to me cost me US$54 in postage via USPS but recently I haven’t been able to find anything cheaper than $75US postage. I would kill to pick up one of those two sets mentioned above for the kind of money they are selling for to local US ebayers.
