I started the Hogan Modules a few weeks back. At this point I have mainly focused on the backswing module. As simple as it looks, it’s quite difficult to do correctly, quite a workout in fact.
I feel like I’m able to do it fairly well at home, although my range of motion isn’t as good as it could be.
Because I’m partnering a friend in a team tournament at the end of April, I wanted to hit some balls on the range trying to integrate the backswing module into my swing. Ideally I’d wait to actually hit balls later in the modules.
I put it on film just to see where I’m at.
I’m not even close to what it feels like I’m doing, lol.
I feel like my right elbow is pinned to my side…it’s not (especially not with the 3 iron)
I felt crazy flat post takeaway. It is flatter than normal, but to me, it felt like the club was around my butt, hahaha.
Clearly I haven’t learnt how to “trip the shaft” yet. That will come later.
And, although I felt like I wasn’t throwing the right arm into P4, I was throwing the right arm into P4.
It just shows how much you must exaggerate the drills to move your swing just a little. Much more work needed before moving on :golf:

Here’s my 6 iron & 3 iron at the range. I was only thinking about the Hogan Backswing Module in these swings.

Back to the range to get ready for 2 man team tournament next weekend.
I’m beginning to strike my irons quite well. I will try and increase my module work after next weekend when on course results don’t matter as much.
Backswing is getting better, but needs more work. The future modules should help the downswing and post impact positions, which are nowhere near the goal yet.
I think I need to pre-straighten my right leg like @lagpressure does, as I struggle to do it during my backswing.
The backswing module work is starting to show nicely in my swing, but from there it is all a bit of a disaster as far as the Hogan Modules are concerned.
I’m doing the opposite of tripping the shaft, from P3 to P4 is all a bit of a mess, and I may have to chop my stupid right arm off, lol.
Important not to get ahead of myself however. One module at a time, and get it right before moving on.
All this being said, I was striking the ball quite well, beautiful flight, little fades.

Hit some P3 to P4 shots keeping the right elbow bent. Shots will want to go a bit to the right doing this. Then compensate that with a more aggressive and flat torso rotation. Feel like the right shoulder is high at impact… left shoulder lower.. just a feel thing.. it won’t actually do this.. but this is the common sensation.

A comparison of my backswing prior to the Hogan Modules. Still work to be done, but quite the difference.

I feel like I’ve done this before, just not from the Hogan backswing. Gotta learn how to trip the shaft yet.

You’ll just keep hitting it better and better. Then it will disappear, then appear again. Like waves coming in that keep getting bigger and bigger.

The first time you strike a ball with the shaft fully tripped, you won’t believe it. Incredible experience.

I played a small 2 man team tournament last weekend, my first time trying to play while doing the Hogan Modules. Results were mixed. I drove the ball extremely well, but my irons weren’t very good. I hit a lot of irons heavy, couldn’t find the bottom of my swing at all.
Pleased to say I think I’ve figured it out. It was right there in the modules, I just forgot to apply it.
Straightening the right leg on the backswing is something I’ve never done, but it is part of the Hogan backswing. As weird as it feels to me to do, it instantly fixed my iron strikes, gave me freedom to turn better and more power.

I started the “tripping the shaft” drills at home. It’s going to take a while before it shows in my swing however.

I’m about a month in to the Hogan Modules.
Here’s some pics of my progress.
The top is after a week of HM backswing drills, the bottom is now.
The most obvious difference is my swing is flatter. Subtle, but important differences are in there too.
The club face is more open. My right leg is straighter, allowing me to turn better into my right heel. My right elbow is sticking to my side more. And, although it’s hard to see from this angle, my wrists are hinging a little earlier.
More work needed, enjoy the process :in_hole:

My daughter’s soccer practice was near the range yesterday, so I had enough time to sneak in a few shots before picking her up.
I’m still trying to make the HM backswing feel more natural and better before moving forward to the next module.
My stance should be wider, but due to arthritis in my right hip, I can’t get it much wider than this without feeling pain on the down swing. Getting old sucks :joy:
