Interestingly, that symbol shows up a lot in buddhism and obviously predates the more known use of it.

When it’s a music get together like that, or a more informal get together it’s called a ‘session’. I’m not 100% sure of all the origins of American country, but there was a fairly big Scottish and Celtic contingent in Appalachia in the early days so I’m sure that a lot of the early influences came out of stuff similar to this. A lot of the early blue grass stuff was attributed to the celtic settlers. The banjo is my favourite instrument and I’ve always been so drawn to the blue grass sound, and got into it a fair bit back a few years ago. It was cool to think of it registering with me on some distant genetic level. Or maybe I just like the music :slight_smile:

I’ve been trying to place that guy’s voice all day after listening to that clip- somehow I’d never heard of Blind Faith :blush: Even though one of my first favourite bands from that era were Cream- my father had an old Vinyl copy of Disraeli Gears that we listened to all the time. I had to search it and realized it was Steve Winwood! What an effortless voice he has. I’d really only known him from Higher Love, which is a great song imo.

Well, well, well. A flash from the past. I used to build those thingys a long time ago at FoMoCo, as well as, upper and lower control arms, cutting spindles, etc. S.E. Michigan has 2 transaxle plants about a mile apart from each other and I worked at both of them…and did a lot of work on those differentials.
Brings back memories…in fact somewhere there might still be a differential housing complete with a Baby Ruth candy wrapper still inside…oops! :laughing:

A lot of stuff to consider within the riddle: 1. Going round a corner probably speaks loudest to me 2. A smaller driving gear engaging a larger driven gear produces more multiplying torgue. 3. The outside arc being larger than the inside arc.

That’s just great stuff, RR. I like when you get into a riddle because you think about all the stuff I hadn’t thought about- which tends to be a lot in these sort of matters. That video is great too. You gotta hand it to humans, they’re very clever. I tend to spout on about species equality and how we’re not so special in the grand scheme of things- which I do believe. But I always remember telling a friend of mine about how smart different animals are etc., etc. He just looked at me deadpan and said, ‘yeah, well I don’t see any fookin’ dolphins flyin’ to the moon’. Well played, sir! Or inventing differentials for that matter…

If so, then aren’t our wrists are self-powered differentials? That is, they can create power, as well as transfer and/or magnify it.

I like riddles too. I usually don’t know where to start, so I just dive right in and often find myself changing directions frequently- which is good I think as directional changes can lead to the most unusual and interesting places for discovery.

I see some other similarities in the differential. I find it interesting that the source of power ( the drive shaft which enters the differential housing ) is applied through the midline of the “pivoting” center…in other words, it’s almost like the “chi” and the “drive shaft” are similarly applied functions.

Now the ring gear is interesting too. It represents an axis of rotation if you will, and each forearm represents each side of the split axle with its side gear attachment which is driven by the ring gear. When rounding a corner one of the half axles on a car needs to slow down its rotation- which is the inside axle. I think this fits in well with active forearms in some ways, as only one forearm at a time can either pronate or supinate- and naturally begs the question: which is the more active forearm when accelerating low and left via pivot acceleration. Although the left forearm supinates and the right forearm pronates coming through, I suspect there is a little more “holding power” through the left forearm through the zone which then allows and assists the right forearm with its stronger and more active involvement.

The entire diffential process really speaks loudly to the “pivoting center driving the arms” :slight_smile:

Great thoughts, RR. My thinking was focused on the drive shaft coming in there as you mentioned. I think it’s an interesting phenomenon that the rotation enters the axle moving perpendicularly to how it’s actually needed. That junction is a similar situation to how we move the ball- our rotation is seemingly at odds to the goal, and can be hard to commit to because of that fact. But it’s so important to maintain a drive shaft type rotation and trust that the energy you create will be converted into the linear force that’s required.
To be honest, I didn’t know all the ins and outs of how the differential works, so it’s cool to hear your thinking on it. It’s got a lot more applicable aspects to it than I had initially realized.
