How to Choose Vintage Irons

I am interested in purchasing a set of vintage irons. Any suggestions on what to look for, brands, models, years I should be looking for will be appreciated.

Thanks!

A vast assortment of discarded, but still wonderful, gear is available on Ebay. Early Macgregor and Hogan models are easy to find and difficult to beat. Beyond your own personal gear demands just pick a set that looks good to what your eye says a good vintage club should look like.

Spend a few hours on Ebay looking around and bounce questions here if needed. I think this site might have a few finished sets, they did before, not sure at the moment.

There’s a thread here with numerous pics and the like.

Would either of these be a good choice?

Yep, those are great. I love Wilson Dynapower irons as well in addition to what RR already mentioned. Beyond that, you’ll just want a set with good shafts and decent grooves.

The first redlines you posted look very nice.

The set for 240 looks to be in good shape. @Blades4life has a recent thread here about those. Hit him up for additional information.

The other set for 195 is a good example for paying close attention because a Percussion Center was inserted into the set. Since it was you might be able to really low ball the offer and turn around a get another single club off Ebay but with a different serial number- so, some options there. In both cases the amount of offset is one of the main features to identify. I’m not that familiar with those specs but I have some older Hogan Apex gear with the smallest amount of offset. Offset figures are generally available online I believe somewhere and I wouldn’t be surprised if Lag, or other folks here, have those figures. Shoot Lag an email, or maybe @NRG might have a stash of offset figures lying about.

Here’s what looks like at first glance to be a decent set of PC’s, but not sure why the ferrules are all black, maybe that way from factory, not sure but if I was a buyer I would first find out about the ferrules, maybe a shaft pull at some point. But a cheaper set for getting your feet wet.

Check out Macgregor too, tons of stuff on Ebay.

edit: just saw you purchased set, good deal, have fun.

Crazy you can have a set of Hogan Bounce Soles delivered to your door for $125. This set would play great. I won the TRGA event in Las Vegas with a set of Bounce Soles that looked about similar condition. The ball cares about the physics of the club, not dings or how shiny etc. Nothing wrong with a nice clean set.. but makes no difference in the actual striking.

I would just make sure they have stiff shafts. Its expensive changing shafts, so don’t be tempted unless they already have the bright shafts.

Would you all consider apex 4 a stiff shaft? I have Apex 5 shaft in my driver and 4 wood.

Yeah Apex 3 is regular, 4 is stiff, 5 is x-stiff

You got the good ones :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Yeah Apex 4 is stiff and 5 is extra stiff. 4’s are much easier to find.
