Golf and Guitars

was going to link to Stanley Clark. But…guitar instead. Singing, guitar, drums, bass, keyboards…live.

Shrieve, just 19 years old on the kit, playing with Santana in front of 250,000 people. Must have been day to remember.

Great clip of Chicago. Even with all the years and personnel changes it’s hard to imagine how they went from this to the pansy (euphemism) band they became.

Great clip of Santana, too. 19? I heard the drummer was 13 and had to get a note from his mother to skip school!

I saw a Carlos interview on Woodstock in the past 7 or 8 years. He said he was so wasted that he couldn’t even tune his guitar…couldn’t even remember what key they were in. I don’t know how you put on such a great show in that condition…amazing.

If you really have it under your fingers… or as we say here in your swing DNA… it’s amazing the adversity you can be subjected to and still perform well. Having good technique really can go a long way. One of the Order of Merit winners on the Canadian Tour was notorious for burning the candle at both ends. I remember seeing him teeing of with bloodshot eyes and he seemed a bit out of balance as if he still had the spins… and posted a 67.
Of course that stuff catches up with you… but it helps to really know your craft, and to know you can get the job done under the weather when needed. I think a bit of youth contributes also. :sunglasses:

At one time… Alice Cooper was a scratch golfer. He played a little fundraiser at my course years ago in the persimmon age and just flushed one off the first tee. Pretty impressive for a guy named Alice.

Very cool about Alice cooper. He’s no match for Kenny G though. Apparently elevator music man is an awesome golfer. Would make for a very interesting “Shell’s wonderful world of golf” where the loser gets to feast on chicken heads or have to listen to Kenny rock the soprano sax depending on the loser.

Headed up to NYC to see Springsteen on Monday. This will be the 10th time I have seen him…it is a religious experience for many of us…still doing three hours at nearly 63. Don’t know if he will do this one without Clements, who died last year, because the sax solo is so…BIG…and Clement’s nephew Jake, who replaced Clements, may not be ready for it, but it is a masterpiece…we are hoping he rolls it out in NYC:

Happy Birthday Herbie, 72 years young today. This record came out 50 years ago!

I heard this interview on Radio New Zealand yesterday. Saxophonist Nathan Haines talking about his latest album which was recorded using 1960s gear and on a 2 track system. He makes some interesting comments about the extreme challenges faced by using all analogue gear. Very similar to persimmon and old blades, I think!

Just click on the above link and when the “open”/“save” menu pops up, choose “open with windows media player”. Lots of good stuff in this interview about the beauty and challenge of analogue.

“Welcome to the United Snakes.
Land of the thief, home of the slave.”

“Try and separate a man from his soul,
you only strengthen him and lose your own”

This is as pure as it gets, period.
Elvin Jones grooving his a$$ off on the drums… swinging at it’s finest. THAT’S super-slotting!
Coltrane’s practice regimen made Hogan look like a slacker, and you can hear it, clear as day.
This is what mastery sounds like, no bs, just plain ol’ purity.
Do yourself a favor: take 6 minutes out of your life to give this your full attention.
It’ll make you a better person.

That’s some nice stuff for sure…where’s my pipe?

Talked to my friend about a picture of his 59 Les Paul, and he is somewhat reluctant shoot and post it. The first question he asked me was…“are the people seeing it local?” I told him no, it was more of an international audience, but still going to ask again when I talk to him next.

He’s gearing up for a summer tour with Dick Wagner, formerly of The Frost, so maybe he’ll bring it out and I’ll try to picture it. :sunglasses:

Gillian Welch is a great talent…some of her stuff has shown up on the show, ‘Justified.’ Guitarist David Rawlings is just insane on this.

Dammit, Newman, hadn’t listened to this in a long time, one of my favorite artists…thanks for posting…

Not my usual foray around these parts but these are a couple of staples in my playlists:

What the hell, couple more… Besides “Are you just checking out your Mojo, am I just fighting off growing old?” is one of my favorite lyrics ever

And then there’s this…

m.youtube.com/watch?v=Nw2OnNoy5JQ

It’s overproduced, it’s shtick, it just screams everything that was the worst of the 80s, its got a massive hook all over it and yet it’s the only Springsteen song I truly love. Every time I hear

Outta be easy, outta be simple enough
Man meets woman and they fall in love
but this house is haunted and the ride gets rough
You’ve got to learn to live with what you can’t rise above
If you wanna ride down baby down into this tunnel of love

chills run down my spine even after 25 years.

Alright lc, if you’re into Joni Mitchell, you might know about this dude. One of the baddest bass players of all time. Jaco!

This tune features Sam and Dave, the guys that sang “Soul Man” and “Hold on I’m Comin’”.
Super funky…

I like the bass a lot, the song is a little Steely Dan meets Kool & the Gang for my taste. But the voice…

Is that of the almighty

When I used to live in LA I went by “the House” on Lauren Cyn where Joni Mitchell, Graham Nash, James Taylor and the rest of the universe either lived or may as well have back in the day. I always wanted to stop and see if there were any residual vibrations left in the air but chickened out every time. The Chili Peppers and Rick Rubin probably killed the mojo in there anyway when they recorded Blood Sugar Sex Magic there. Not that its bad but its blasphemy doing punk pop in that house. PIL maybe but not the Chili Peppers. Even Jane’s Addiction…

If you’re a bassist this is a friend of mine named Mike Hightower, the AV is terrible on this but whatever. He’s been around Hollywood forever, great studio guy, blues mostly. He may hold the record for oldest strings known to man, I think he’s had the same four since 1974. Great sound though, somewhere in between reverb and unidentifiable. Really cool.
