I have a set of Bridgestone 222CB irons and asked a club builder to bend them 5° flat. They told me they could only get them to about 2° flat and wouldn’t go any further.

Since these are forged irons, I’m curious whether that’s actually a limitation of the 222CB heads, or if the shop is just being conservative because they don’t want to risk damaging them.

Chances are it’s the latter. They are forged from Japanese S20c which is the equivalent of 1020 here in the US. Are they at “standard” now or were they upright. Bending the steel is not always the issue. You have a chrome plating which sometimes doesn’t last on deep bends. I would probably do it 3 degrees and then a day or so later tweak them the remaining amount if I was doing them. Where are you located?

They’re currently at standard. Located in the US. And that’s what I figured.

Where in USA. Almost everyone on the forum has a “guy” or are the “guy” so if you’re near someone we can get this handled pretty easily.

I used to know a guy that knew a guy that was the guy but that guy isn’t the guy anymore. Couldn’t resist. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

You don’t need to follow “5-6 degrees flat” you just have to find your best posture and set-up for a given length and then find what lie angle sits dead even on the ground when aiming clubface dead square at target. Hogan goes over this in his Power Golf book which gets completely overlooked.

Short clubs like wedges and short irons won’t need to be bent that much for the average person, maybe 2 degrees flat at most. But when the irons get longer, it does take up to 4 degrees flat and sometimes over for some people.

Chicago is where I’m currently located

I Have a call into a PGA friend at Cog Hill. Stay tuned!!!

Thank you!

Direct message me your number as the technician wants to call you

Just FWIW, my experience has been different. I have a new set of clubs, all 3 flat from standard; I’m happy with the longer irons, but it’s Left City with the 9-PW-AW and I’m going to have to go flatter.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that Trevino would adjust his longer irons more upright and flatten out his shorter irons.

That is very correct. The geometric advantage is much more noticeable in the higher lofted clubs.
