Should I or not, put ABS flat lie angles on my collection of playable vintage golf iron sets?

While browsing the internet (oh-oh!), I came across this Jeff Sheets Instagram reel talking about bending irons:

It’s an excellent discussion, and Jeff shows how he bends a 17-4 stainless steel iron head, 9 degrees flat (he’s doing this for unusual needs, such as special needs/paraplegic golfers).

Interesting and shows that our flat ABS lie angles are achievable with almost anything, it’s just that anything other than good forged vintage blades, require a lot more expertise.

In case you don’t know who he is, Jeff Sheets ( https://www.jeffsheetsgolf.com/ ) is a 40+ year golf club industry designer veteran, and is the responsible designer for the classic 1999-2000 Hogan Apex and Hogan Apex Plus irons ( https://www.jeffsheetsgolf.com/hogan-past-projects ), he made those first Spalding-owned Hogan irons to be universally regarded as successful continuations of the Hogan golf club legacy.

Jeff has a free ebook/PDF named “The Perfect Bend” that (as of August 2026) that he is providing for free online via a DropBox link, you can see that link to the free download, in the Instagram reel description above.

In the book, he discusses (among other things), the following Table of Contents:

While I am fortunate to have Dave Whitley of M.U.G.S. Golf Sarasota to do my iron bending for me, this information is very useful for those of us who, like me, appreciate the value of flat ABS lie angles and would like to know what’s involved in the physical act of bending irons and titanium woods properly.

Of course, reading a book about bending clubs is one thing, but years of proven experience in doing it is a completely different world. Regardless, from watching Jeff’s Instagram’s and his free books, we’re all better for his sharing of decades of experience that he gives us.

I trust this info is helpful.
