Twomasters- swing thoughts of the past

Check this video out, from an outfit in Northern Calif. Lag may know of them. His business model is about relieving/removing scar tissue (permanently…hmm) from the body. Only costs about $10K for a week’s worth of therapy in Marin County. He blames Tiger’s accident for his putting yips–increase in scar tissue–I think that’s a stretch. Not sure I buy into everything he’s saying, but worth a look.

Two, that side by side of Tiger then and now is just sad. He worked his ass off for years to get himself into that position on the right, too. Amazing what bad information can produce.

You always have to look at the money trail. When you’ve got products to sell, it’s pretty easy to be convincing about anything.

Doesn’t Tiger have the rep of being extremely knowledgeable about the golf swing? Hard to see a side-by-side like this one and wonder if Tiger knows anything about the golf swing.

I’ve asked before after seeing some older Tiger video… what did/does he NOT like about his “old motion”?!
:nerd:

Robbo–I really think some of this with Tiger is the world he moves around in, or any top pro–Two and Lag could add here. Tiger really loves weightlifting, loves working out hard with the Navy Seals, spends a week yearly with them and goes at it hard, keeps up. Can bench, or use to be able to, with top linebackers at Standford when he was there. He thinks of himself as an athlete first, golfer second. Then, add in Nike constantly whispering in his ear, try this driver, here’s a new one, try this, do that. Also think about the fact if you’re Tiger, you come out at Milwaukee and then Las Vegas and blow the field away with length. More wins, TV ratings and coronation ensues (rightfully so) and he begins his reign. He wouldn’t admit it, but standing on that first tee he knows what’s expected of him, and that’s to pull driver, even though 3-wood would get the job done. He’s a prisoner of his branding and success. There’s no going back to 2-iron off the tee, doesn’t even carry one, I think. What’s maddening is his stubbornness. Hell, he doesn’t even hit his stinger anymore, I don’t think, an amazingly deadly shot, that I’m sure the rest of the field is happy not to see.

PC,

Lot of that makes sense and doesn’t surprise me. Just seems that at some point he’d wake up, smell the java, and get right with ball, or go down as the 2nd best player in golf history (maybe). Surely his quest to beat Jack still burns inside him and would make him step back and re-think his approach.

Maybe not,

robbo

You’re right, and hope he wakes up soon, times awasting. Four or five more majors seem almost insurmountable now, doesn’t it?

I remember seeing TW on the range on television at The Barclays I believe it was and he had just ‘officially’ started with his new coach…and they showed him with the dreaded headcover or glove tucked under his right armpit hitting shots.
That was it for me…I couldn’t take it anymore watching the destruction of quite possibly the greatest player ever on all levels and got in touch with TW’s caddie, who I have known forever, and told him if he wants any chance of catching Jack’s major haul he had better stop that nonsense in a hurry…TW has stuck with the new guy so far but the results have been short of spectacular…i am not going to say anything bad about someone but I really think TW needs a coach or helper who has played the game at a legitimate level who not only has some own experience to fall back on but has tested what works and what doesn’t under the heat of the battle himself… Butch was a bit of a player and he did well with him…the others have not been players at all and they place too much guesswork without experimental feel and knowledge into what they are feeding him.
Maybe one day…I can get the call!!! I would help in a heartbeat. It wouldn’t be too hard to fix…but the farther it gets broken the more challenges he will face

Found this interesting ‘very old’ cartoon golf strip by Gary Player- talking about just the same thing of the glove/towel/headcover under the arm

This won’t be a popular statement with a lot of “coaches/instructors” out there but I think it’s so so SO very true. I’ve heard the other side of that argument but when you’re dealing with highly skilled players to begin with many of them simply needed a cheerleader more than anything.

TW is so naturally gifted you could nearly tell him anything and he can run with it and achieve something…however…he has totally lost his feel for the golf club…the golf swing and his natural instincts…he honestly needs someone who can steer him clear of the generic bs and point him in the direction of how he learnt the game…give him something that will let him be a kid again instead of tying the poor guy up in knots with guesswork and experiments
Like I said I believe he honestly wouldn’t be a hard fix because he is such a quick learner…but it’s not about teaching him something new…he has perfected the swings he has been taught and he is going backwards… so what does that tell you about what he has been taught?.. It’s about triggering the feel in his body back to normal…for him… instead of the constant fight to perfect something that naturally is not in his blood

Pretty sure that Gary Player would have an appropriate phrase to describe this ‘treatment’…

I don’t think Tiger’s love of weightlifting (or fitness level) is hurting him. I remember the first time I met Paul Gruber (drafted #4 in '88 to Tampa Bay) in the stadium weight room at UW-Madison. He was doing some arm curls and I asked if I could jump in and he looked at me and said, “Only if you don’t take any weight off!” I laughed and said, “Good, because I want to add a little.” and threw on another 10lbs per side to bring it up to 165lb. which was what I weighed at the time!

Using weights hasn’t hurt my flexibility and has only helped my confidence. The only thing that hurts you with lifting is doing it too close to when you start competition. It’ll absolutely kill your touch!

I do agree that Tiger has had too many handlers and think that when his father passed - he lost the guy who knew his swing (and him) best. I have little doubt that as much of a student of the game (and golf swing, apparently) that Tiger is…he’d eat up what Lag is teaching here and that would reignite his career.

Captain Chaos

CC–you don’t think a young Tiger–skinny, lithe, speedy, didn’t have a better swing and mechanics? Do you think he could execute that swing in the body he has now? I’m asking b/c I don’t know. Read today that Tiger is all in with Foley’s teaching and talked about how he’s gone through dry spells 1-2 years long and sounds like he’s willing to give it that long again. My God, man! He’s an old 35–tick, tock.

Tiger doesn’t hit his stinger anymore because he can’t, which is why he’s got the 5 wood imo. I don’t see Tiger hitting driver, or doing anything for that matter, to please the crowd. He’s a different breed of human. He won the Open in 06 I think, without taking the driver out of the bag. I think he wants to hit the driver, and thinks he can, so he does, but with what he’s worked on over the last 8 or so years, it’s next to impossible to do- at least consistently.
My thinking on his weight lifting is that it’s got more to do with his off course or internal issues, than it does with his desire to be a better golfer. I don’t really see his physique being of great benefit as a golfer- I agree that he looked more mobile prior to really bulking up- he can kind of look stuck in around the upper arm chest area now.
His upbringing was hailed as genius when he was at the height of his powers, but in my opinion, based on the ‘training’ he was put through to ‘toughen’ him up, that was a lot for a child to handle. Time will tell on that front.
Maybe there should be a Tiger thread for this stuff because he really is a fascinating and worthy study- how could he not be?!

I vote for the Twomastery to continue…

Two- I noticed on your post impact photos that your right hand is slightly away from the club but your left hand is still driving/pulling/moving hard. It’s similar to Trevino and a few other top strikers around that point. Would that have been a feeling you had or recognize?
Cheers…

Bom,
I don’t think I had any particular feeling of doing that…it could have stemmed from when I was younger that I always had a slight draw and my bad shot growing up with a hook…so maybe I tended to hold on more with the left and keep powering it through to not left that draw/ or overdraw (not going to call it a hook!!) sneak in
It could stem from when I first started I had a relatively strong left hand grip…If you think about Trevino or even an Azinger they had strong(ish) left hand grips (Azinger certainly) and probably had a similar look to what you suggest… possibly out of necessity to guard against the left shot and it became inbuilt?
Over time my grip shifted to what people would call neutral but maybe some of that intuition was still there because of my early grip

Now that I have written that I think that was cool that I never had a slice when I first started!!!..goodness knows most do

~Happy Birthday Bradley~
I wasn’t sure what to get you until I saw this. Who couldn’t use another birdie and sweet roll
