All good golfers are strong in the hands & forearms. Their golfing muscles have been developed by a great deal of playing and exercise. The average golfer hasn’t much muscular development where he needs it to control the club in fast-moving powerful action. Consequently when the expert golfer says “Don’t hold the club too firmly” that’s misleading to the average player who interprets the advice to meaning holding the club too loosely. What feels like a very easy grip to the skilled player, is equivalent to a hold of considerable intensity to the high-handicap player. Therefore it’s perfectly logical that the high-handicap player should engage in some forearm and finger strengthening exercises.

I am beginning to think that a major change in club selection for the average player may be not far in the future. What directs my thinking is the fact that comparatively few players who score between 80 and 90 can hit an effective 2 iron or a 3 iron shot consistently.

I am definitely of the opinion that there is bound to be growing and well warranted popularity of the 5, 6 & 7 woods.

On the longer irons and woods, it’s not a serious fault to have the lie of the club a bit too upright so the player, when standing comfortably, may have the toe of the club slightly off the ground at address. You can “miss them good” and get pretty fair results, when you hit the ball with the toe slightly up, but you haven’t a chance in a hundred to hit a ball effectively if you have the toe closer to the ground than the heel of the club when the ball is hit.

Whether you or anybody else calls the pay-off a hit or a swing, I don’t care. That’s only a matter of terminology. The action is that of whipping the clubhead through the ball with the hands. Not slapping it, waving it, flinging it, stiff-arming it, but whipping it with a tigerish lash. The great hitters in golf are those who move their hands faster than those whose distance and precision are inferior.

Hitting the ball a long way isn’t a matter of size or weight of the player. It depends on effective use of the hands, rather than on trying to throw the weight of the body into the shot or even, within reasonable limits, lengthening the backswing in the belief that a longer backswing will enable one to accelerate clubhead speed more and get the clubhead moving at maximum speed at contact with the ball.

You know you must have clubhead speed to make the ball move far. Your hands are holding on to the club; therefore your hands are the main element in making the clubhead move. Your body and arms could remain in fixed positions, yet your hands alone could hit the ball a crisp blow. The faster your hands move, the faster the clubhead is going to move. But if your body is moving ahead, too, the relative speed of your hands will be diminished. Therefore, to get the greatest speed of the clubhead, you must get the greatest speed in your hands, and that can’t be secured unless your body is on a steadily fixed upright axis.

It all adds up to the swift-moving right hand being the source of dynamic power.
