Nice to see Butch and Sundance on the same fairway again…
@JeffMann
Jeff, I share your analytical minded approach to the golf swing. I have reviewed your website and videos on YouTube.
You are clearly a very intelligent guy, and I understand your a retired doctor. My dad is a recently retired doctor and he introduced me to the game. In some ways you remind me of him.
I bear you no ill will, but your approach to critiquing the ABS approach leaves much to be desired. You seem to be very interested in ABS teachings, yet at the same time you seem to speak from a position of authority.
I have seen your last post on the now closed “science validates ABS” thread, where you seemed to show some humility and conceded that you had falsely bandied accusations of deceit. I was really encouraged by that. However you seem to have regressed and are now claiming that the video that prompted your concession was contrived. It is getting farcical now, and you are really at risk of losing credibility (outside of the ABS forum at least).
I think you seriously need to reassess this post-retirement project of yours. At very least you need to spend less time on golf forums - more time to spend on the golf course. You will be a far happier person.
Best regards
Gerhard
Hey John,
Am glad I found you and ABS on BBG. You have confirmed and enlightened me on the feels I had but could not find elsewhere. You also have provided crystal clear instruction on the slot (4:30 for those that don’t know) and more importantly how to play for post impact intentions. Thank you.
Blessings for you and your mom.
Thank you to everyone involved in getting this wonderful instruction site back up and running.

What a great visual illustration. Huge change in a players experience to start feeling shaft flex and the orbit pull. Its by no means easy to do but once u taste the horizontal tug throughout ur whole being theres no going back. Thx
Is this something you would recommend to do with ropes?
I like the Mach 3 stuff. I know Mike who rubs that and one of my students Mark Hensby has done their work for a few years now and it compliments the swing stuff we have done really well.
They use ropes and other items with most if not all the intention being beyond impact- it’s good stuff
They only teach strength and speed and not really swing mechanics which is a blessing for us teachers as many speed and strength people want to get too swing involved and plant some weird ideas in the players head. I try say- let me do the swing and you do your thing
I have a couple of their products: speed bomber, velociraptor and the mamba. I can see how they would help to build strength for ABS.
We all need to thank William Hanisch for doing the migration of the databases. No one thought it was possible… and yet right here we had an ABS student who was able to accomplish the task. I am so thankful… and everyone who enjoys this site going forward should be as well.
The M3 tools thick rope tools look ok. I have used them with Drew Cooper. I don’t think the shaft with the short chain and golf ball (like a mace) is great though. The little golf ball runs in front of the shaft at the bottom and kind of drags you into impact, giving a good looking impact but it’s kind of a false positive IMO. Plus the one guy that has a lot of instructional material about it promotion a flipping/ casting motion through the ball with the tools and with the club and is left wrist extended at impact face on.
Any high tech training aids you like? Also do you use foresight/ trackman in your instruction and how? It seems foresight’s optical (rather than algorithmic) tracking of AOA and path. Would be killer in the hands or a ABS style instructor. Because 430 might feel like it (clubpath) would be +20 right but with rotation it would be +1 or level.
So a powerful tool in matching feel and real.
I think they are taking tour players to another level (from where they were 10 years ago). There might be ways to do this without the device tho. Bryson and others have said the new launch monitors just make swing changes take 10x as fast.
Thoughts?
Thank you @hanisch! Great job.
I have several things but really don’t use them too often. I am still in talks with my club and developers and investors to get a building erected- then I would use these things more as I would have them setup and ready for any session.
I have a Trackman, a GC Quad, Boditrak pressure mat, Sportsbox AI is a new one I have just started working with. This could be interesting as it gives out measurements on turn and rotation and range of motion Hip slant & sway. Trail leg Lead leg, Pelvis extension and so forth. Apparently there are new versions in the pipeline that will capture hand speed and club speed etc- which is something that could be interesting as far as our release and mods here to see how they function.
I also have Blast- which I just don’t use at all- which is a tempo tool talking about backswing/downswing ratio.
I have a mirror screen app where the camera I can set up wherever is necessary feeds to the iPad so players can watch themselves rehearse things right at their feet by watching the screen.
Also some wrist angle item that measures ulna, radial, bowed, cupped wrist conditions. That’s pretty cumbersome to get on correctly and basically unised as of now
All in all not much beats my bag, downunderboard and some sticks and cones I use for visuals. They go to the range everyday with me
Mirror vision is a brilliant app and cuts down time enormously having to stop, playback video etc. instantly can correlate feel to feedback. Love it.
I would suggest maybe giving this one another shot. If it’s the one I have, it is called “Hack Motion.” I wear a glove on the left hand and so the device isn’t hard to get on at all…it’s like putting on a wristwatch, with a little clip that attaches to the velcro strap on the back of the glove. They ship it with a little elastic you can put over your hand if you play without a glove.
This device provides instant feedback on what your wrist is doing at all points in the swing. I don’t know if that is something that you and lag look for in ABS training, and I’m not claiming it’s something anyone here should use.
But from a student perspective, if you follow the recommended use of the device, it has surprisingly dramatic and fast effects on ball striking. Having feedback during the swing as to how you are setting your hands in transition, and being able to use the device to train a more consistent hand position, seems like something very useful to me.
I second that. I have the hack Motion. I was just using it this morning. For me I want to NOT flatten the left wrist in the backswing. (I have to feel VERY CUPPED at top AND through transition). The flexion just kind of happens.
I also look at the graph line and try to hit shots hard but keep the line as SMOOTH as I can.
Yes! For me, my shots fall into a nice pattern with regard to curvature when I extend slightly from address to the top (within the recommendations of the app or slightly more extension), and when my wrist flexes (flattens) at impact, again, within the range recommended by the app. I also end up with a better swing path.
One of the things that help me feel cupped in the left wrist is to keep the right wrist straight. This position of the right straight throughout the swing is contrary to holding tray theory. I use Peetes hooker glove to practice this position which is basically maintaining address position. Ballard has one too
Nobody teaches what I do lol
Ive found the velociraptor useful for my mod3 drilling
I used my mamba yesterday and velociraptor today. I can definitely see how they can make the pivot stronger.
It’s all gone a bit GIFtastic over here.
