The Missing 90 degrees of Rotation

Still catching up on Lag’s channel after an extended walkabout. Wished his grey shirt series was available during ABS1, maybe it was but don’t remember at the moment, or maybe it was but behind a pay wall. In any event, this one is top of the mark and clears up some things from before. I’ve been missing the additional forearm rotation for stored power. It’s awesome.

1:52-2:12 is really important if it’s something you struggle with. Obviously he’s exaggerating it quite a bit, but one big lightbulb that I remember changed everything for me is realizing that while we want the club to be laid off flat in the downswing, we don’t want it to be happening like that on the way back there at P1, for the exact reason John talks about in the video. The tendency is for the shaft to steepen in transition when you change directions.

So then what? For me the right hand has to feel like it’s staying higher than the left. You can and should flatten the shaft a little later on in transition, but rolling everything open immediately in that way bringing the left hand higher than the right and flattening the shaft quickly on the backswing like he shows is a ‘death move’. And it used to be MY death move. Ingrained in my swing DNA, I was a black belt practitioner of that particular move. It sucks. You’re thinking flatter swing, you’re thinking laid off shaft, you’re thinking October 1977 Golf Digest, Hogan says “I roll the face of the club open away from the ball”… not like that. It can feel powerful, it feels like you’re really “loading up”. Don’t do it.

The rest of that Hogan quote describes his method a little more clearly. Cupping the left wrist. Then you can roll the face open while still keeping the right hand above the left as the hands raise from P1 to the top, and the shaft can stay relatively steeper for that part of the motion

Cupping the wrist by itself doesn’t really fix this issue necessarily though, because you can do both. You can raise the left hand above the right AND cup the wrist. I’m speaking from experience here. Still dead. But the cupped wrist at least gives you the ability to continue the backswing correctly with a high right hand.

Hope that made some sort of sense and can help someone who hasn’t put it all together yet. I’m obviously not a golf teacher :cowboy_hat_face:
