The Masters

Yes thanks Bradley - very cool to see it all on here

Masters Blasters–Quiros, Vegas and Woodland pumping it out there around 340. It’s only the first round, but now what is Billy Payne going to do? As Gary Player said, you can’t put the tee boxes in the roads and parking lots.

Really great interview by Mike Maves speaking with Jackie Burke about his 1956 Masters win. Jackie is at Augusta this week and was honored by the golf writers association for his contributions to golf.

I had to wonder about where Tiger’s head is at… in particular his wedge shot into #15 (round 1). He hits the shot, and turns away in complete disgust, however, he nearly holes the shot out?

Apparently he is more concerned with what he is working on than the object of the game? I’ll take “thin to win” any day. I have no problem with less than perfect shots finding their way next to the hole. I just don’t tell anyone! :sunglasses:

Disappointing to see YE Yang at 7 under… teeing off on 17 and hit an absolutely horrid drive. I would think you would really have to be tuned into your game at that point… and good solid ball striking should be a given. I don’t understand his second shot which seemed very very risky to try to thread something through the trees. His shot did clip a branch, and he was very lucky to get the ball into the left bunker somehow. That’s how you make triple. I just don’t understand taking that risk in the first round.

have a few more to post still

grow the rough i guess, if they can hit it out there 340 & straight & the rest of their game is good, they deserve to dominate. Is Gary Woodland going to be a real star ? He has the length of Bubba & Dustin but that swing looks more dependable. What do you think ?

Looking at the pin sheet there
Hole 3 – is a good one…guys will take some bogeys(or worse) there if they get too aggressive
Hole 4-- is a tough one also…very narrow gap there
Hole 13-- Guys will bail out long past the flag here and there is then always a chance of putting it into the water from 40 feet past the hole-- FAST
Hole 16-- Tough to get close there-- will see lots of players fall down the slope and have a 40 footer uphill with a side winding left to right breaker

Depending on how you are striking it no flag position is too tough…BUT…if you miss it in the wrong spot then the trouble can start.
I will be interested in seeing if they firm the greens up…I believe they will.

I remember the year I played there in 1998…Scott Hoch told me to go out late Wednesday and play… because how they control the speed of the course by drying out greens with the underground cooler/heater, and the way they can alter the run by which way they mow the grass would be much more evident late wednesday and the course could be entirely different than the morning of or especially the day before practice rounds that I had played. It was good advice.

I think with the barrage of birdies yesterday, it will be tougher today based on firmer greens.

I can’t imagine the powers that be at Augusta would grow rough. It’s all about getting those birdie roars back, which they’ve done successfully the last two years. Seriously, I think at some point they’re going to have to rollback the ball. These three guys are only the first wave of bombers coming off the assembly line. Can you imagine what it will be like in even five years? I like Gary Woodland, he has a young Jack Nicklaus body, very solid at address and through the ball. I get the impression he could go at it much harder but is holding back. Seems fearless on the greens as well. Vegas looked shaky on 18 green trying to get in. I love Quiros’ action, but his change of direction is a bit frightening. Also happy to see Sergio post a good first round.

I am still scratching my head trying to work out how Dustin Johnson gets his left wrist in that position … that’s gotta hurt in a few years to come

Yang takes the lead at -8. Didn’t he fill his bag with hybrids so he could bring it in high on approaches? I think his longest iron in the bag is a six. I read where his caddy was confused b/c all he sees is a bunch of headcovers in the bag.

Anybody else shake their head when they heard Phil might be putting two drivers and four wedges in his bag? Is that indicative of what the game’s become or what?

Awesome collection of photos and vids Bradley.

Bradley thanks so much for sharing your ‘private stash’ of photos and vids.
I enjoyed them ALL but there were a few that were especially titillating
I loved seeing the course thru your experienced eyes and perspective and viewing up to the minute swing videos one after the other like that is just perverse.
In a good way.
Thanks again

should be a Masters w/e to savour

can Tiger back up on his last 11 holes - will Phil make a few putts & get back in it - will Rory keep it going - they will surely firm up the greens won’t they to avoid the score going too much lower, wonder if that can play to Furyk at -4 if it becomes more of a grind

compulsive viewing !

Day 3 pins

day 3 pins.jpg

That 8-iron that Tiger carved in there on 18 from the wood chips was vintage and just for a moment I was transported back in time. I think it’s beneficial that Rory is paired Saturday with Jason Day, big comfort factor there. Not sure about Tiger’s driving, but guess what? Foley said Tiger has his stinger back and may unveil it over the weekend. If he gets this shot back, watch out. Foley says Tiger is organized, has it all figured out and is now ready to play golf and not swing. We’ll see. A very compelling weekend is upon us.

Tim: where are you getting those pin sheets?

Twitter @DaveTindallgolf

Fowler/Day/McIlroy certainly seemed to set up a nice dynamic that they all fed off… the dynamics of the pairings are possibly more important than we give them credit for, it will be interesting to see how KJ is with the Tiger circus for example, might be a distraction he would rather be without

This is how I imagine Angel Cabrera’s Saturday evening:

Waitress: And what can I get you?
Cabrera: I’ll have the 15-ounce steak, medium rare, please.
Waitress: And can I bring you a baked potato and some creamed spinach?
Cabrera: No, no, just the steak. In fact, bring me two.
Waitress: Anything else?
Cabrera: Yes, red wine, lots of red wine.
