The Ginty & Baffler

I had a very interesting conversation yesterday at the golf course and the topic was hybrids. The question came up after watching Lee Trevino give a lesson and Lee said if he would have had enough sense to put a 6 wood in his bag he would have won 10 more Majors easily. So it made me think about a Hogan Sure Out hybrid club I had and used it so much the wooden neck finally cracked. It was cold outside and most of the older golfers that don’t play much but show up to the golf course daily were sitting around and they chimed in.

One of the older guys played on the UGA the black golf association that was founded in 1925 due to segregation of the PGA tour. He flat out said with conviction that what companies are calling hybrids today are nothing but a Ginty and Baffler that they played in the 50s -70s. And I chimed in, nothing new under the sun just a new name on an old product which is what marketing does really well.

Back to Trevino, it made me think about guys like Paul Runyan and Bob Toski who were both considered short hitters but they set their bags up to be able to compete.

So the question I left the clubhouse with on my mind was how many golfers actually have their bags set up to compete and give themselves the best chance to score ?

It made me look at my bag differently because for the most part I play 2 - PW & I will add a 54 SW and putter that leaves me driver, 4 wood and depending on the course I can switch in and out another wedge or another wood. So I was pleased with my bag set up because it had versatility and every club had a purpose versus just carrying clubs in my bag that would not add to my scoring potential. I’m interested to hear from others about their bag set ups and are they set up to help you score or are they set up based off some elite player that was in the 1% of great golfers that ever played.

Cheers

My bag is always set for conditions in play, and as a walk-carry player I load 10 clubs into the bag for their day in the sun and those 10 might vary obviously on conditions and layout. I might go down to nine clubs if the grass is brown. I love brown, it should be the new green!

I did a little test with my clients, I had to chart their bags / approach shot for 5 rounds then we went through their cards together. They were all shocked to realize they were carrying 14 clubs but only using 9 to 11 of them every round. Sometimes they would use 7-8 clubs if they were driving the ball well. In my humble opinion the 14 clubs rule can be changed and it would really help golf. Professional players in today’s game might use 6 clubs a round. Dennis Johnson played an entire year and didn’t hit a single iron over 7 iron. That is a crazy stat but it’s not uncommon on tour today.
