The beauty of golf that the Hickory Society accepted and thrived because of it

“Play the ball as it lie and the course as you find it.”- Bobby Jones
The Society of Hickory Golfers (SoHG) and similar groups regularly play on modern, regulation golf courses, not just historic ones. While they use pre-1935 antique clubs or approved replicas, they often play on modern courses, playing shorter tee boxes to accommodate the 180-yard average drives.

Selecting the correct tee box is the equalizer I often play with my college players and elite high school players and they will play the tips and I will play between 6200-6500 yards and our tee shots will be in the same vicinity. Par 5s are 3 shots for me when I use persimmon usually driver, 5 wood then a flip wedge which is extremely fun. Most of the time my score is lower on par 5s than theirs.

Par 3s are dead even I’m playing a mid iron and they are also. Par 4s are where the rubber meets the road because with classic equipment you have to think more about playing the hole from the green backwards versus modern golf from the tee box through the green. That subtle mental adjustment can make the difference between businessmen pars and tough bogies for classic golfers.

Playing the correct tee box bridges the gap between modern and classic golf at the end of the day. Its such a beautiful sport that as a coach I enjoy seeing people out walking and enjoying nature while chasing old man par.
Let’s not forget about the things that make this game the best in the world.
Cheers

Michael,

This is the exact experience I had on a recent round I played. I treated myself to an expensive round of golf on my birthday back in March at a local Hyatt resort course. I had a solo tee time and as I approached the 1st tee a young skinny kid came up and introduced himself and said he got paired with me. After the intro, he walks to the back tees at 7300 yards and rips a 300 yard drive into the fairway. I am step in 2 tee boxes in front of him at 6300 yards and dink my persimmon driver 230 yards down the fairway. Both balls ended up within 5 yards of each other. This continued for the rest of the round and we had a great day. We spoke on how we should of had a match against each other as we ended up in the same spots on fairways and around or on greens for approach shoots. Come to find out he was a D1 player from a north western university just of trying to qualify for the Velero Open in San Antonio TX. He didn’t make it, but had some time to kill before returning to college so I got to enjoy a round with him. Goes to show you that the modern game and classic game can be enjoyed at the same time even between a novice golfer like me and a D1 college golfer.

Thanks for sharing your experience more of these stories need to be told so that more people will get a better understanding of how all three phases of golf can be played on the same day within the same group with very similar results.
