After years of struggling with inconsistency in my ball striking, I finally decided to commit to the ABS training modules, starting with Module 1. I’ve always admired the precision and compression of classic swings, and the philosophy behind ABS really resonates with me.
Just a week into Module 1, I’m already noticing a difference in my wrist angles and the feeling of holding shaft flex. It’s humbling but exciting to go back to basics and re-learn what a real strike should feel like.
A few quick questions for those who’ve progressed through the modules:
How long did it take you to really “own” Module 1 before moving on?
Did you combine Module 1 work with any swing drills on the course, or strictly kept it off-course?
For practicing at home, are there any tools or setups you found helpful beyond the standard gear?
Looking forward to learning from your experiences and staying committed to the process. Appreciate any insights or encouragement from the ABS veterans here!
Everyone is going to progress differently through the modules depending on what your strengths and weaknesses are.
Me personally, I didn’t find Mods 1 & 2 too difficult to engrain, but after almost 3 years of abs, I’m still having to rehash mods 3 & 4, bad habits have a way of creeping back if you let them.
Are far as drilling at home, I kept it pretty standard. I choke down on an old 1 iron with the impact bag. I like the feel of a straighter faces club hitting the bag.
On the course, I try not to think too much about the swing. I find the swing thought of simply holding shaft flex through impact is enough when I play.
On the range however, I exaggerate what I’m working on as much as I can without worrying too much about the shot.
Range is for practice, course is for playing.
Good luck, I’m glad you found ABS
To answer your question, my experience as a mid-handicapper who played and studied golf for 50 years, there’s been many small but noticeable incremental improvement experiences and ABS puzzle pieces all along the way. Initially at first it was hardly noticeable… but over time and in aggregate, a remarkable positive shift has occurred in my ability to strike the golf ball.
After 1.25 years of ABS, I really started to notice it kicking in. I did need to “Learn a new (ABS) way to strike the golf ball”, and depending on where you’re coming from, if you (like me) were not already a low single digit player, you’ll probably need to go through a learning curve as well and that did take some time for me. I’m glad I kept drilling, so be patient and trust the ABS process and drilling - Lagpressure’s drilling methodology really gives you a pathway to be able to really learn this “new and different and better way”. My experience has been at age 66 and even with swing speed declining slowly due to age, the ABS drilling has given me, an ability to control the golf ball on the golf course that has never been better and keeps getting better. I can report that after 2.5 years of ABS drilling, I can actually feel the ABS swing to be ingrained enough that I can trust it (most of the time) on the golf course, vs. the swing that I had before I started ABS.
I documented some of that experience here in this ABS forum post, I hope the info there helps. The practice routine that I have been doing is documented there-in:
For me, the major helpful drill so far has been the ABS Module 4 “Magic Trick” i.e. ABS pitch shot drilling. Modules 1,2,3 are the foundation for this Magic Trick drill. The referenced ABS post of mine above gives more detail - there’s some associated YouTubes in that post and there’s more info in those YouTubes’ descriptions.
