Putting is 90% confidence

One of the most overlooked realities of putting: the equipment is secondary to the decision-making system and mental state of the player.

A blade, mallet, or specialty club like a chipper can influence forgiveness, alignment, and feel, but none of them solve the core putting variables:

Green reading ability — seeing the correct start line and understanding speed relationships.

Commitment — choosing a line and making a confident stroke without manipulation.
Pre-shot routine — creating consistency under pressure.

Emotional control — accepting outcomes and staying present after misses.
Distance control — matching energy to the intended roll.

Start-line trust — allowing the stroke to happen instead of steering the ball.
A technically sound putter with the wrong mindset often becomes a reactive putter:

They change grips after misses.
They second-guess reads.
They decelerate under pressure.
They manipulate the face trying to “make” putts.

A confident putter can use almost any tool because their process is stronger than the equipment.

A great way to frame it for golfers:
“The putter is the delivery system. Your mind is the operating system. A better delivery system cannot fix a corrupted operating system.”

The best players in history have shown this.
Bobby Locke, Tiger Woods, Ben Crenshaw, and Brad Faxon all had different equipment preferences, but their elite putting came from visualization, routine, touch, and confidence.

For a coaching system, I would categorize putting as:
20% Equipment
Head shape
Toe hang
Length
Lie angle
Grip
Alignment aids

40% Skill
Green reading
Speed control
Start line
Stroke mechanics

40% Mental Performance
Routine
Confidence
Commitment
Pressure response

The best putter is not the person with the most expensive putter — it is the player who can stand over a 6-foot putt with a clear picture, a committed intention, and no fear of the outcome.

My thoughts about putting have changed so much over the years, so much so I would say for me personally putting is 90% I don’t give a s**t anymore, and although putting it’s not my strongest suit it’s at least allowed now in Judge Chamberlain Haller’s courtroom.

I use a heel shafted blade putter after examining Jackie Burke’s thoughts on same. Inside 10 feet I become a toe putting maniac- easy to align a partial head, and best part is the brain knows you’re using the toe and will make you accelerate to accommodate: win-win!
