Peter Thompson swing hit action

Fascinating to learn more about the 5 time open champion. Would you say he was doing something similar to ABS? I saw some analysis stating he was doing the TGM right arm swing. Curious to know the thoughts of those of you who may have some personal knowledge from down under. Thanks!

I love Peter Thomson’s swing! His Shell’s match against Gary Player is definitely worth watching. 1962 at Royal Melbourne. Enjoy.

Knowing almost nothing about Thomson’s thoughts on dynamics it’s hard to say how he viewed his personal process, but he looks far removed from any directly applied TGM discussion relative to the trail arm. Lag or Two might be good sources for first-hand information.

What’s clear to me however, through observation, is how clear it was to him to properly clear the pelvis from ground up thus making room for the right arm. :person_golfing:

Interestingly enough when Thomson first saw his swing on film he said he hated it!! He said it looked nothing like it felt…

That’s probably why it was so good

I think this photo says a lot. You can see he’s holding wrist cock through the strike and appears to be applying Mod 9 ABS draw shot protocols (Climb the Wall). From the photo… it would appear he’s hitting a draw into this fairway from where it looks like he is aiming and the fairway relative to his body.

Interesting, Norwood used the same ‘climbing the wall’ phrase. Looks like Peter sees the back of the shaft more than he does the top of the shaft from his POV.

Seems to be the case that holding some wrist cock through the strike makes it easier to hit up plane into the finish because they don’t have to re-cock from an unloaded condition.
