I’m just back from my first range session using real golf clubs. It was short since the heat here in the mid south is a bit oppressive right now. The clubs I was using were Hogan Speed slot driver and 4 wood and a taylormade tour preferred 7 degree driver. As flakes of rust fell off and the old joints started moving again I started to hit some quality shots. Problem is that the ball flight of the drivers was vastly different than in the days of wound compressible balls. The spun more and therefore had a penetrating launch followed by a 2 stage lift. These NovusGolf balls have such low spin off the driver that they rely on launch angle more which these golf clubs don’t offer. The four wood was flying surprisingly long so I would venture to say that a 2 wood might be a better play club for us golfers having to use these new balls. Wonder if anyone else has ideas.
The modern ball is made to get up a lot faster and get to its launch window sooner. Classic clubs and modern ball is something that my eyes had to get accustomed to. And when I switch back to modern blade models like I do Friday & Saturday I need to hit 10-15 shots to get my eyes adjusted before I can play a few holes. When I play my classic bags I use Callaway soft or Wilson Duo balls with very good results. But you could not pay me to use either ball when I play my modern bag because my spin axis goes through the roof and a 3 yard draw turns into a 15 yard hook. So I play Taylormade TPX5 with my modern bag.
Thanks Blades. I’ll try those when I get out to the course. This experience was with range balls some of which srixon range balls with some recycled strikers as well. I had a great time hearing the sound of a wood block hitting a golf ball again though. So pure!
