I’m seeing a lot of interest lately and matter fact all the way back to 2009 to be honest about a flatter modern driver and I have seen some attempts that turned out to be golf version of Frankenstein at best and not playable or usable on the golf course. Ping and Srixon both make modern drivers that can go up to 3 degrees flat. When you add in the structure of the modern driver 3 degrees flat will fit most likely 90% of the followers in ABS in my experience as a professional golf performance coach.
We have to remember that the modern driver does not behave like a persimmon driver as far as torque, bulge, and gear effects. So a modern driver at degrees flat will have similar playing characteristics to a Macgregor M85W from the 1950s which is considered by many as the holy grail of Macgregor drivers which came in at 52-54 degree lie angle with persimmon and the characteristic that persimmon have. Just something to think about next time you want a modern driver more flat. Persimmon and Titanium have totally different playing characteristics and that should be taken into consideration. Trying to take a modern driver to 48 degrees flat with the characteristics and material of titanium is really making the driver unplayable at best.
I suggest picking up a Ping or Srixon turning it down to 3 degrees flat and for added stability installing a steel shaft at 43-43.5 playing length which will get the driver between 14.5 - 15 ounces total weight depending on shaft choice. You just might be pleasantly surprised and don’t have to go the Frankenstein route which will most likely be unplayable after getting out the lab anyway.
Cheers
