I’m hoping that someone with more knowledge than I have can resolve a question that has been nagging at me for weeks…Is this the result of a shallow swing path and lie angles that are still too upright ? …The picture is of my Hogan Icon blade 4 iron and I am trying to find out if flattening them another couple of degrees will move the impact more towards the center of the club face or do I have path issues ?….I have been told many times that I swing flat and more than one teaching pro has wrecked me by attempting to get me to swing more upright so I absolutely refuse to ask for their advice. Any input would be greatly appreciated
Draw a line on the ball, set the ball down so the line is vertical, then hit it and see if the resulting mark is vertical on your club face. That’s the easiest way to test lie angle and is more accurate than a lie board.
If the lie angle is good, and you’re hitting it solid, there is nothing wrong with a wear mark a bit off center - many pros do the same.
Hey k2baloo, I appreciate the reply and what you have said…I have seen the test that you mentioned but haven’t ever done it…I’ll try it out to see what happens but my ball flight tells me they are too upright at present…too much draw…i just can’t get my head around why the strikes are heel biased rather than more centered where i would like to see them…I’ve scoured the internet looking for an answer but the problem is that one site will say one thing and next says the opposite….I have to confess to being like a dog with a bone with my need to know….cheers
What make and specs are the irons? If they are long hosel that can/may move the sweet spot towards the heel. Perhaps your body may be smarter than your brain and know something you don’t know, where the sweet spot actually is. ![]()
Thanks Geoff, the clubs are Ben Hogan Icon blades, lie angle on the 4 iron is 58 degrees(the same as my old 4 iron) but compared to my old irons the hosel is nearly 3/8th of an inch longer…I had no idea that it might make a difference and you’re right, I don’t know much about club design or how one thing can affect another which is why I posted the question…there’s a big part of me that just has a need to know
…The slightly heel biased strike is something that has happened since i got the new Hogans and it got me wondering why that would be… I’m guilty of assuming that we should be looking to strike the center of the face but maybe that’s not the case… Really appreciate your input…cheers
Try to grip down 1/4 to 1/2 inch to see if it improves. I cut the butt of and old grip and split it lengthwise to fine tune length for impact spot. I’ll usually swing weight last to make sure that nothing is too out of wack. Point is length is primary fitting parameter.
Good luck ![]()
thanks for the advice…i’ll give it a go and see what happens…when i bought the hogan icons it was heads only and i had the shafts taken taken out of my old irons and put into the icons but they have a longer hosel and i’ve read that will shift the c.o.g. towards the heel slightly which might be a factor as well… i appreciate you taking the time to offer some input…cheers ![]()
