I guess this is actually about a set of laminated woods, not persimmons - a set of old Macs that I bought for next to nothing and have used for dozens of rounds.
I cut them a bit shorter, added weight to the heads, and put on larger, heavier grips. They are easy to draw or fade and I love the 4 wood. And it’s really hard to find good 4 woods IMO.
I took these on a trip to CA last year and played a round with a friend who works at Callaway along with my 75’ dynapowers.
It drove him crazy I was playing with these antiques while he used the latest and greatest. I didn’t play that well, but scored okay on the back nine.
Finally, on maybe the 16th tee, he asked if he can hit the driver. Of course I let him and he ripped it right down the middle on a nice, low trajectory. The next hole is tight and l hit my 4 wood off the tee. He asks to try that one too, and hit a tight little draw down the middle off the deck. He was puzzled and loudly asked, “how does that feel so good??”
By the end of the round, he admitted he saw merit in the old clubs, which was something of a minor miracle to me.
