Yeah, I’m generally pretty skeptical when it comes to p.profiles but Doc’s is really excellent as it’s entirely based upon it’s application in an athletic environment and that’s always such a true manifestation of who we really are. You can BS through just about anything but sports always reveals who we really are. I don’t want to seem like I’m just spewing endlessly but there’s a specific order I want to get all of this in plus I’m finishing writing 3 final exams for my classes so hopefully while I’m juggling all this it still comes out ok.
It’s been in a good order at a nice pace so far. It’s great for me to be able to read a thread like this little by little as it happens. I’ve tried to read LTLGM, but I’m only on about 53. There is so much info that it’s hard to get caught up without skimming sections.
Good luck on the writing finals. Today was the last day of school for me, so starting tomorrow, ABS is the only class I’m enrolled in. I have 12 weeks of 10 hour days now, instead of rushing out after school. . Livin’ the good life!
Yeah I can’t wait to get done with these things & grading them next week. If all else fails I’m just gonna flunk everybody… hehe who said life is fair anyway?
The other topics I’ve started notes on are: tournament prep & scouting, a couple of other course management topics, traveling & two short game topics. What else can I go over here?
I’d like to hear about dealing with personality types in your pairing. Slow guy, talkative guy, Type A alpha male personality guy, advice guy…I imagine you’ve seen it all and you have to perform and post a score no matter who you’re with. Aside from just ignore mode, what else can you do?
7 or so go to sleep…
The other 7 are divided between guitar, tv, food, etc. My preffered method of practice is to go out for a few hours, then come home, then go back out, etc.
Sure, in a tournament it’s hardly ever an issue. It’s our office and we’re all doing our best trying to be courteous and give each other our space. If I get paired with a friend, Joel Kribel for example we’ll shoot the breeze if we’re waiting on the tee or something but that’s about it. We were paired together in sectional US Open Qualifying in '97 at El Cab in LA. It was 36 in one day & there were like 144 guys for 3 spots. I didn’t play well at all, Joel shot 66-67 to break the local record and win it by 4. It was one of the most stressful days of my life, the ESPN cameras were following us the entire afternoon round, I was hopelessly out of it, 5 over after 21 holes & I’ve never felt so in the way & out of place while playing an event. I was loving seeing a good friend put on the greatest putting exhibition I’ve ever seen & all I wanted to do was cheer him on but couldn’t for obvious reasons. That’s a long day.
But in an event I know I’m gonna be out there a long time & while hardcore Analyzers drive me nuts it’s still a job, not enough to pay attention to. If I get pissed my mind is 1000 miles from where it should be.
Watching the BN, I’d love to hear from the trackman & techno guys on exactly what the advantage of all this s#!t is on a course like this. I want to know precisely why I should play bottom weighted clubs with huge thick bounce and a ball that launches at over 15° that doesn’t spin or protect itself in the air on a wide open baked out course with tight lies in the fairways and thin heaters in the rough. The place it’s most apparent is around the greens, since nobody can control their distance everyone is missing greens and the only two options are L Wedge or putter because the rocks won’t check on dry greens and so nobody can chip these rocks inside of 5 ft. What a joke because this track isn’t that hard, if you time warp back to 1986 the winning score is -20 instead of -8 which will win tomorrow easy. I was watching an old tape of the '85 Westchester Classic (that came on immediately after Lakers-Celtics game six, how good was that sports day?!?), Ray Floyd, Roger Maltbie. & George Burns went to a playoff at -13. If they could do that to a par 71 Westchester with US Open rough they tear this TPC a new a-hole easy. So somebody please explain why tour players should be using modern clubs & balls here, I really want to know.
My dad and I were talking last night about Sergio, and how highly touted he was when he first came along. If you take a young guy from Spain and instantly make him a multimillionaire, how can you possibly expect him to continue practicing?
I will be pulling for him to hold it together and play well tomorrow. Of the guys I can come up with off the top of my head right now, he’s probably got my favorite swing on tour. He’s someone who, had he been born 30 years earlier, could have gone on to greatness.
There’s nothing wrong with Sergio’s mechanics, they’re quite excellent in fact. Far better than the gear and ball he is obligated to use. One hole on the back was playing into the wind, Faldo & my favorite person in the whole wide world (Kostis) were remarking how useful a one iron would be & Sergio & Palmer were fitting choked down 3 woods into the fairway. Sergio ended up looking like he was digging a trench. You get in the wind with the new balls and you get so steep in a feeble attempt to keep it down and it gets so hard to control the distance & it’s only a matter of time before you lose solid contact.
It used to be that you had two different shots to hit it low, into the wind you would use a shallow angle of attack to minimize the spin. In fact when you were really flush and good at this move you could even ‘turn the wind around’ and use the breeze to improve the flight characteristics and just bomb it an extra 30-40 yds. The downside is when you do it accidentally with an approach & fly the world. Best case it’s hard to do consistently but it’s good to use when you do need it. But downwind you do do want to come in steep and spin the snot out of it while keeping it down. That combo holds greens and minimizes the extra momentum of the wind. This one has a problem too in that it’s hard to get consistent contact low to high on the clubface and when you hit it a little fat you just made a do-it-yourself flyer and when it’s thin it’s a SCUD. But this is just about the only damn thing that works at all with these damn balls & it’ll destroy your mechanics if you do it a lot.
So with Sergio he’s doing the best he can, he hits a ton of greens but has a ton of long, difficult putts because the ball is uncontrollable and after so many years it has just infected his putting stroke and cost him his confidence. I’m sure his practice habits are fine, he’s just got massive mental scar tissue from the stuff he can’t control.
I didn’t see any of today’s round but I think I caught Sergio’s tee shot on 14 Friday which I think is what LCD is talking about. Lots of consternation with his caddy b4 hitting what looked like a TM hybrid while the announcers discussed how useful a 1 iron would be about now. My initial thought was why isn’t he just slamming a 3-iron down the fw? Surely he hasn’t gone the route of a hackers bag with hybrids covering the 2,3.4, and 5 iron!
Yesterdays 1 or 2 iron must be close to todays 3 iron. Instead I watch Sergio lay the sod over what ever he tried to hit, almost looked like he topped it, but the divot looked like a pw.
One more example of how out of whack things seem to be on tour these days. Sergio can’t just rip a 230 yard 3-iron and hit 9 or PW into that green. Really?
lCdV, Can you share some insights on how to avoid back nine collapses. Or put differently: how to preserve mental and physical state throughout a round.
No problem, if it’s something that’s happening regularly what do you feel is going on? Is it fatigue, feeling out of your comfort zone, losing your mechanics or something else?
So how do I petition the Tour to get that 3 1/2 hrs of my life back anyway? Somebody tell me how ANYBODY in the field deserves 1.17 MILLION DOLLARS and an invite to Augusta for that exhibition. Sergio, 77? Really?? Even if it’s PRECISELY what I described yesterday, SOMEBODY has to at least pretend to be a professional. That TPC isn’t difficult and the conditions were normal for Dallas at the end of May, the wind never even blew that hard. I say bring em back in the middle of August & make em play the tournament over from scratch under some REAL conditions and make em earn it after that BS. If I see another one of those insipid ‘These Guys Are Good’ commercials I’m goin Elvis & shooting the TV. It’s that bad.
