I just signed up.
Even though I am a mid-handicapper and at age 66, and I probably always will be a mid-handicapper…
The continued improvement in my game and ballstriking from the base Advanced Ball Striking ( ABS ) modules (now 2 years in) is unmistakable.
I consider the Hogan Modules to be a good investment for me. I may never get to play at the level of all you great low handicap ABS students, but the pure pleasure of learning and improving, and knowing and seeing that my ball flight slowly but steadily has improved month after month since I started ABS… says that I better start the Hogan Modules now to see what I can learn at my age. After all, since I am in the autumn of my life, no time to wait!
Looking forward to it! Thank you John Erickson for documenting for us your thoughts, method, and experience.
John, you are going to love this. The work you have done with the ABS Modules is a great set up for engaging in Hogan’s technique. Most will feel familiar, with a few tweaks here and there.
I’m really excited to teach this stuff, as it’s never been taught correctly before in my opinion.
John E. Do you think Hogan knew he was doing something different with his swing compared to his competition? Do you think he knew he had an advantage over everyone else?
I can only speculate obviously… but I would think so… yes.
In a most simplistic view, Hogan tripped the shaft, flattened the shaft through transition, then had a massive “orbit pull”… “cut it left” … low, left and around… action post impact through P4 and up into finish. He hooked his way in and cut his way out far better than anyone I have ever seen past or present.
Other players have done these things to a lesser degree… usually with some kind of compromising or counter manipulation.
For example, it’s easy to cut it left post impact if you come OTT… sure… but can you do that from a deep 4:30 line? Plenty of players on the 4:30 line who then flip and throw their hands and right arm at the ball to assist in closing the clubface (timing based swings) These swings can look beautiful and appear “Hoganesque” … but flip it around from the DTL view and it’s not the tight orbit pull Hogan had … usually not even close. Viewing the swing from DTL and Caddy view give a more accurate 3D perspective of what is going on.
How Hogan came up with this complex engineering marvel is the most impressive thing… then proving it’s worthiness through the fire of top level competition and dominating the game. His technique needs to be seriously looked at and considered.
Was he doing something different? Absolutely 100%. Did he consciously know every inner detail of what he was doing? I imagine so. Did he share these things with others? Absolutely NOT! His books are full of landmines and Wizard of Oz like “Y’s” in the road that can lead the wrong direction. Did he write his books while he was still competing? Yes. Was he the nice guy that was going to tip off his competition to the inner workings of what he worked so hard to achieve? Not likely.
