Not many people more knowledgeable than Mike Clayton when it comes to golf course design and set-up. A good read.
A lot of the greens from the classic era of course design had big undulations but the green speeds were much much slower back then. It was more about reading the putt and the slope, and not as much about how will I protect here from 3 putting or worse.
