Goose holds NOTHING back here.. and he might as well be talking about golf. The parallels are identical. This is an incredible interview from a guy who takes no _____ from anyone.
I really feel the same way about golf that he does about baseball. Goose just puts it all out there taking no prisoners and calls out everyone and everything. I really really wish we had this kind of voice in the game of golf from one of the legends.
While this is an interview about baseball, it’s also an interview about golf just as much as I see and hear it.
Holy shit Batman. Goose talks just like he pitched. I lost touch with baseball after following it closely. Didn’t realize same as golf. What a great interview. I sense he doesn’t like Cashman :). Only bone to pick is Jeter giving a caddy $100 for 36 holes. I always loved watching Goose pitch. He was so intimidating. I forgot he finished the Bucky Dent game. I grew up in Boston and came home from school to watch that fiasco. All I remember is Yaz made the last out (not a Yaz fan).
Lucky to have seen some great stuff in Boston when I was there. I was at the 99 Ryder Cup and 88 US Open. Drove Jim McKay, Dave Marr and Jack Whitaker to the playoff on Monday playoff. Amazing to remember. I remember thinking they were late as I picked them up at 11am at Copley Plaza in Boston with a 20+ min ride to the country club and it started at noon. I was worried I might get a flat… Found out years later they were on the air only for back nine after watching it on YouTube. Poor Monty in 99…he took so much abuse it was horrible (Mrs Doubtfire they called him). Also at the Stanley cup game where the lights went out double overtime that ended at 2am on a work night. My buddy was drunk and hungover in the same hockey game as they stopped serving after the 2nd period
Lucky to learn the game at 3 Donald Ross golf courses too. Ponky, George Wright and caddy at Charles River CC. I didn’t realize how lucky I was after playing many other not so great courses. I knew every guy in this article and was in it as well.
Rick Reily was at the course for a week plus and should have paid these guys any money he made on this farce of a book he stole from us. Could have at least changed the names…come on Rick… Danny and Bluto. Wonder if those guys are still above ground. Danny made his money at the track and slept in the clubhouse at one point. I’m not talking a country club clubhouse either.
Reminds me of watching the Departed movie. Loosely based on Whitey Bulger who I had some interactions with as well. Crazy stories for another time. One of his guys actually golfed in our group at Ponky I found out years later. My buddy told me he was burying guys in quicklime during the week and golfing with us on the weekends. Nice guy actually would have never in a million years guess that. Great memories all of it. Blue collar golf for sure.
