Driver Weights from 1970 and other tales

I recently posted this photo on social media and received a lot of reaction about it. I also received some messages from people adding some other players info which will also post below.

Message from someone about Peter Alliss

As a young man, I played with Peter Alliss three or four times. In some ways he was a freak.

I recall a similar list that included Peter Alliss whose driver made all of these drivers look lightweight. 15 1/4 oz driver with a E8 swingweight

He had uncommonly long fingers. He used double extra stiff not extra stiff. I have never seen grips that thick. I once watched him play against Jack.Nicklaus and when nicholas hit a five iron, Peter hit a seven iron… But Jack was much stronger off the tea.

We all remember him fondly as a commentator. But as a player of irons, i have never seen compression like it even today.

I’m obviously nothing compared to these players, but my primary gamer:

42 inches - 14.7 ounces - D5 swing weight - rusty old true temper stiff shaft (6’3”, 190 lbs).

It would be nice if someone can send you verified numbers for some of the players with more unusual specs. Thanks for sharing this.

Looks like 13 1/4 to 13 3/4 was extremely popular in this era

I just checked my 1969 Hogan Speed Slot and it came in at 43 1/4 inches and 13.933 ounces @D7
