Best All-Time Persimmon and Blades?

According to ironfinder, looks like the Haigs are from 1961 – http://www.ironfinder.com/modelshaftall.asp?ModelNbr=389.

Some lovely vintage clubs to be viewed here http://vicemilledputters.com/gallery/main.php.

What I wouldn’t do for that mint Jumbo LFF http://vicemilledputters.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=57

OR that set of Hogan precision irons http://vicemilledputters.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=184.

Not sure I have seen to many better looking clubs that Greg Normans personal Spalding Top Flite 1 iron http://vicemilledputters.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=139

Here is a real nice set I have- MacGregor Ben Hogan Parmaker
I don’t know what exact year they are- somewhere in the 40’s I would believe. I got them for show, maybe to hang in my office.
They look brand new. I know the woods were refurbished- and the irons look mint. Nice leather grips- shafts feel stiff.
Would love to smack them around one day- but they look too good for their age to hit

Nice…
Haven’t seen a 2 wood for ages!

Can anybody explain why Hogan made 2 different variations of the Hogan PC model? I had a set in 86 I bought slightly used and used them for about 3 years. The model I had had more of a softer rounded sole and leading edge. The leading edge and trailing edge at the back, were not sharp, but had a nice bevel. I’m not sure how long they made this version, but most of the models I saw later was a model that had a slighly different grind, which was more sharp. Can anybody expain why they made this change? I’ve asked this question a few other times on different forums and never got a straight answer. Thanks.

A couple of my faves are the Hogan Personal irons from '83 and the Mizuno TN-87.

I had a good friend of mine that wound up playing mini-tours and such and for quite some time he had a set of MacGregor Muirfield blades that were the best looking irons I’ve ever seen, but I’ve never seen them anywhere else. They looked more like the VIP line, but all they had was the ‘Jack Nicklaus’ stamp on the back. A little larger clubhead and no diamonds on both side of the grooves. He wound up wearing them out since he hit them so much and I never bothered to ask where he got them. Had to be a limited edition set.

Freddie…

not sure I know the answer either… but would like too…

If you can post pics of them… maybe one of us can see why the design changes might have been made from a players standpoint.

My PC’s have the Vector #4 Shafts in them… which are a very different feeling shaft… firmer feeling with lower ball flight than the typical 4 shafts.

Freddie,

Good eyes! I don’t know the answer, but I have 2 sets of PC’s, one from 84/85 and one set from 86/87 (based on the shafts in each set) and the newer model does indeed appear to have a softer leading edge (although the trailing edge looks the same on my sets). I’ll see if I can get pics with enough detail to show the difference.

I would imagine the forging process in those days required some amount of manual grinding of the outer edges to achieve the final product. I don’t know how much “license” they would give those guys but perhaps we’re just seeing the “artistry” of different individuals involved in that process?

Hey Robbo,
That would be great. 2 sets huh? You lucky dog… Yeah, I thought I remember it being the other way around though, on the years. What I mean is the “newer” PCs I thought had a more squarish leading edge and more blunt. I remember my Dad after seeing the ones I got going out and buying a new set right before the redlines came out and his were completely different grind to what I had and the toe seemed slightly different, the whole club looked a little more squarish at address too. Also, one model seemed to have a white line on the bottom score line and the other did not. (not 100 percent on that), but thats what my memory is telling me. None the less, both models were great sticks. I don’t have my PCs anymore unfortunately, but would like to pick a set up for my “vintage” bag. I don’t want anybody knocking themselves out trying to find an answer, just thought by chance somebody would know.

A friend of mine just found himself a mint set of PC’s and those have the white bottom groove. I was very surprised to see that, none of the other hogans I’ve seen had it. I have the other set myself, so I’ll be able to compare the two soon enough.
