Playing Persimmon in the Titanium Age

hands up - mine was the 78 (@strathaven golf club) not my best, pretty much average for this season, but first time out with my new bag of weapons leave me looking forward to next season.
I’m not sure if its the irons, or just my abs work (just breaking into M2) but divots were markedly different. Definately not pork chops.

I can’t speak highly enough of the work that NRG has done on my clubs. In terms of workmanship and communication, i wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this to anyone over here in the UK.

Courtesy of Arnie I acquired a set of Maxfli Pro Special persimmons - would reckon I only really caught about 2 spot on (the rest were acceptable for the day) but when I caught them the THWAAAK sound is something special. To watch a high faded tee shot drop onto the middle of the fairway or land a 5wood on a green inside 20ft from persimmon sure is a special feeling - (if I wasn’t a tough burly scotsman I’d say it was almost spritual!)

(I’m almost embarrassed to say that I didn’t take out the driver, I put in an old Warbird titainium so I could use it of the 1st…silly really, that was the only time I used it, and I won’t be doing it again!)

Thanks Teddy. You should have seen the state it was in when I got it off ebay, but as soon as it was sanded down, it had Arnies name all over it, cause lets face it, its pretty much a perfect match for the one Lag made him in the Persimmon Flattening guide.

Skinnybuddah,

I bet in a couple of weeks time you won’t even be able to look at a club with offset, or hold one thats a normal weight. I know I can’t, I never even used to notice offset, now it just look like some kind of joke.

Funny you should say that. I picked up one of my dads taylor mades the other day and couldn’t believe how alien they felt!

From my experience I’d say to anyone who is still considering going to full ABS spec i…go for it straight away.

I took a baby step by getting my old reg. shafted lightweight wilson blades flattened to lag specs and played away thinking this would be a gradual step.

I then picked up a set of persimmons and hogan pcs, from another abs’r and he recomended NRG to spec them up for me.
Firstly thanks Neil, you’ve done a great job, absolutely lovely lookin set and its great to know that in the UK there’s someone who understands whats required and is on the modules as well.
When I first enquired to the local pga pro he assured me this couldn’t be done - and it wasn’t something that he would recommend since it would ruin my swing. Glad that didn’t deter me, all I’ve bought from him since this is 6 balls!
I can’t believe the difference in feel and how quickly they’ve become normal. The biggest thing for me has been the weight, you really do know where the clubhead is at now and I feel confident of knowing these clubs will mean business through impact. They’ll be in my bag for a long long time, although I like those black scotts you’ve got on Lagbay!

On the aesthetic side, the irons (hogan pcs) are lovely to look at, and I know know what you mean about offset looking weird.
The persimmons are beautiful, initially I didn’t want to hit them because they looked great…I got over that kinda quickly mind you
Can’t wait until next season

Thanks Stu,

I think that having your clubs set up properly is a massive part of learning ABS, I couldn’t imagine stepping onto the tee anymore with anything in the bag that is upright, light, offset, graphite shaft etc, or not having set that are totally progressive in terms of weight and lie. I wouldn’t say persimmon is essential, though I play them all the time, but flat and heavy is absolutely essential across the bag imo, as is having a steel shaft in your driver.

Am glad you feel like you are benefittng from them already, I think you will be ahead of the game when you get onto the transition modules.

Thanks for the update.

Played today with my persimmon driver, first time i’ve taken it out in about 6 weeks. Just a friendly game off the yellows, but shot a 2 under 68.

Cheers Neil, that is a fine round indeed from any tees. You are one of the very very small percentage of people who can show up and shoot below par. That is quite an accomplishment, especially when challenging yourself with persimmon. Must have been a great feeling to walk off the 18th green.

Great round! Congrats!

It’s a much more rewarding experience to do it with persimmon and play the course as it was originally intended. We all understand that the current rules allow for the rocket clubs… but I would much rather go out and shoot 68 knowing that I actually was playing the vision of the architect rather than bombing the ball over all the fairway bunkers or cutting doglegs and rolling the ball with a long putter because I know I can’t really do it properly.

Playing the persimmons does improve your feedback, your golf swing, and ultimately improves you as a player. All you have to do is hand a similar set to someone else and see how they go with it.

It’s a big reality check for most.

Well played ! Inspirational stuff, turning yourself from mid single figs into a player.

Cheers Lads, slowly getting there.

Hello All,
Had a great experience this weekend. Went out with a buddy for an afternoon round at one of our local tracks, course was backed up so we skipped around and managed to get 15+ holes in, and the wind was stout 15 -20 mph. I have been trying to settle on which persimmon to game on a regular basis , since I have my monthly mens club tourney this weekend. I have a mid 70’s or so Powerbilt that I refinished/ reshafted and flattened a bit, I just hit that club great all day! the lower ball flight and the energy that the ball seems to retain (I have been adding weight to keep my drivers right at 14.2 oz. as that seems to suit) is something else! And I gave up very little distance , and worked a low baby draw all day that just ran out down the fairways bitchin’-…- even managed to out drive my buddy and his Taylormade skillet more than once  That MOD1 work is really paying off!.. For anyone new to ABS this not an experience to me missed, the solid feel, feedback and the return of CONTROL to my tee game is in a word : wonderful! This is, and will continue to be a great, enriching experience. The satisfaction of getting educated on the older gear and learning to work on my own clubs thru everyones help here at ABS, and then taking this to the course in the modern day is just too cool! Can’t wait to beat 'em down this weekend old school style!

cheers!

i had a great experience this week as well. played for the first time with my vintage blades (m85t’s). Havn’t had the chance to buy/find any persimmon yets, but im still looking.

Since i didnt have any persimmon’s and the course is only 6100 yards or so i just used my irons. The round started off rough but after 4 holes i started to get used to the super heavy blades. I bogeyed the first four holes but then something clicked and i hit some of the best shots of my life. i played the next 14 holes at +4 and i had back to back birdies on #5 and #6, something i have never done before. #5 was a 180 yard par 3 that i hit a nice baby fade 5 iron within 5 feet. #6 was a short 320 yard par 4. I hit a nice baby draw 5 iron right down the middle. Then a nice easy 9 iron within 8 feet for another birdie.

From that point i played very well. I hit some really bad fat shots but also hit some amazing baby draw 3 irons off the tee. A shot i could never do before. I could never hit a 3 iron before. Not sure what the difference was.

It was really fun using every iron in my bag. usually i only use 3 or 4 of my irons. The game was just so much more fun. I wasnt worrying about my score, i was just enjoying the vintage clubs. I didnt have any swing thoughts, the game just seemed to come to me so much easier. Golf is so much more fun when you can just play. I didnt look at any yardages, i just saw the shot and hit it. it was like my mind was free. what a great feeling

Can’t wait to get some persimmons and see how my game improves.

Great stories. Getting persimmons is easy. Ebay is full of them, and you can usually find a refinished one for under $25. I just got a beautifull six screw MacGregor Tourney Custom for $5, plus $12 shipping. Really is a tragedy no one wants this stuff…but it is a gain for us. Go get one!

i know i can get them off ebay. im just looking at local thrift stores, good will, salvation army, garage sales, flea markets, exc. The thrill of the hunt is so much fun just looking through the bags of endless clubs and looking for the right one.

Yep! The thrift stores all have my picture posted at the door since I have cleaned out all the vintage stock and continue
to prowl their halls!!
Truly a tummy tingling experience when you locate a real keeper, kinda like dating!

good luck

That grip looked larger than normal. Where is the reminder on a golf grip, on top or underneath?

Usually underneath…
but a reminder could be placed anywhere under the grip material.

It was usually a piece of wire that created a bulge line that would “remind” the hands of where to feel the wire.
