MacGregor Pro-Pel 1 shaft short set

I have a chance to buy a short set of Mac irons (missing 7 iron) with pro-pel 1 shafts. Does anyone think it is worth buying them and then trying to match an odd but similar Mac 7 iron, and match it as best as possible with a modern extra stiff shaft? I know Lag wrote against buying a short set, but he also said the pro-pel 1 shaft was the holy grail of stiff heavy shafts…

Nevermind, seems that set already sold on ebay; I was just very excited because I stumbled onto the first set of Pro Pel #1 shafts that I had ever seen on ebay, but in the future I will probably err on the side of Lag’s advice to stay away from incomplete sets of irons, as finding the missing irons can be troublesome. If I was more of a DIYer and had my own workshop, I might have grabbed them for the shafts, but for now I am relying on professional clubmakers to alter my equipment, and will err on holding out for a complete iron set…

You’ve dodged one there.

Don’t buy incomplete sets and only buy them with stiff shafts. Those pins can be very difficult to remove and you’ll probably struggle to find anyone to pull the shafts out, most pros won’t even consider trying it. I know its tempting to buy cheap sets with regular shafts, but you’ll spend a fortune on reshafting.

Good call, you’re right, I dodged one there.

Here’s a full set with ProPel 1 shafts

2-9i and a double service wedge.

If you don’t like these keep poking around, I’m sure there’s plenty more..

I can’t wait to hear what you think about them @JShelden
Let us know what you think once you get a chance to hit some shots with those. Hope they do the trick!

Yes, I will report what I think of them. Please be patient, since it has been several decades since I played regularly, and it might take me a while to get them to ABS specs. I’m taller than average, so I plan to figure out how much longer than standard length I need by setting up a few wedges longer than standard, and eventually sending the set to Lag with a prepaid return label, to get the offset taken out. My last good set in the 90s and early 00s were Hogan Apex Grinds 3-9 with Apex 4 shafts, but I eventually got rid of them; I wish I had held onto them. But, yes, I will eventually report back.
