Thoughts on lowering the head in transition? Seems like most good ball strikers do this yet it isn’t talked about enough
Creating vertical pressure into right leg at transition is one of the things we work on in module 2.
No such thing as the head going where the body goes. Heads are meant to stay level and nearly immobile. Here’s proof. ![]()

Or if you’re Hogan you lower some in the backswing and then more in the downswing…
These are screenshots from a Wayne Defrancesco video:
don’t think great ball strikers lower their head — I think they allow it.
That little drop in transition feels like the body yielding to gravity so the club can find its place. Pressure goes left, arms soften, the club gets heavy… and the head follows the system down for a moment before everything unwinds.
Whenever I try to eliminate it, I end up having to manufacture speed or depth later. When I let it happen, the strike gets easy and the ball sounds different.
It’s one of those things everyone does, nobody teaches, and you only notice once you’ve lived in it for a while.
I’m in agreement with you it’s not something that you try to manufacture because in the 250 milliseconds of the downswing there is simply not enough time to be thinking about actively lowering the head. Neurologically we just don’t operate like that at high levels. What I tell students is never forget that a functional and usable golf swing is an athletic dynamic swinging motion at the end of the day. Now depending on how the trail arm works pre impact and post impact can change the dynamics but we still have to train ourselves to remove the sensation of adding unnecessary tension throughout the motion.
Cheers
Curtis Strange moved his head way back over his right foot on the backswing. It was condemned by the golf media as a sway. I see it as he was just getting over the 4:30 line on his way to back to back US Open titles.
