They need to leave these courses alone and just build new 8000 yard courses for today’s game.

Playing the great tracks with the right ball and clubs is going to provide the most enjoyment because you are now respecting the game, the intentions, the architect and history which today’s game isn’t doing. They are missing out even if they don’t know they are.

As usual your points are very valid. So many great holes are just ruined with modern equipment. I think of Yale’s “Biarritz” #9. 213 from the back tees over water 2 crosswise plateaus bunkerson four corners and deep swale across the center. Designed for long iron or fairway wood and today that is a 6 or 7 iron for a lot of players. Just not as daunting to execute that shot anymore.

I forgot to say that MacKenzie was way ahead of his time in that he foresaw the changes that would come in the future. One of the design traits of a great course to him was the ability to increase its length. I don’t think he anticipated lengthening them by thousand dog yards thiguh
