Ask Bradley Hughes!

Welcome aboard Triggerfish. You’ve come to the right place. And no need to worry about your skill level. As long as you put forth the effort, Lag and Two will turn you into a lean, mean, golfing machine.

Also, as noted in a previous post start thinking about ABS spec gear. I just used some Christmas money a bought a Powerbilt Citation persimmon driver. There are some very good deals on Ebay.

Good luck!

Yes! Buy some gear… and if you’re looking for great gear, look no further than Lag and his collection. He can sell you the right gear with the right specs (lie angle, dead weight, swing weight, etc… especially lie angle) for a fair price… I would recommend getting at least woods from him. He’s got some great stuff!! And hitting woods with the right lie angle is critical to learning on this forum…

I can say personally that I was playing flat irons and upright woods for a short while before I bought some from Lag… And it made a HUGE difference.

I think the smartest thing a student on this site can do is to buy flat clubs prior to starting the modules… Without the right gear, I just don’t think you’ll have as much success.

Zack

P.S. welcome to kirk, jwb, and all the new students! I’ve been here for about 8 mos. now and I’m hitting it better than I ever have in my whole golfing life!!! So much fun! You’re in the right place!

Thanks! Been looking last night on ebay and already ordered this: ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dl … OC:US:1123
Hopefully i made the right choice…and hopefully i can learn how to hit the damn thing!!

looks like a great club! make sure its the proper lie angle at about 47 degrees…if not (and likely its not) John knows a guy in california that can re-bore it and refinish it… And he’s very good… In addition John can make sure it’s weighted properly… Looks like it’s got a good shaft in it…

thanks for the info! I need a few woods also so I will be asking John if he can sell me 1 or 2! I’m hoping one day i can play to a decent score with these kinds of clubs! Very exciting!!! I have alot of work ahead of me so as soon as the back is in working order i start!

Great info zacashus. Thanks!

I am in week 2. How long do you think I can go before needing ABS spec gear? I would like my next investment to be spec irons.

I would switch your clubs now… You can usually bend irons to the proper lie angle (unless you have cast iron cavity backs). And I would not waste any time in doing so… But woods are harder to come by… If you see a great set of woods that Lag has, then pick them up! You’ll be glad you did once you have them…

Zack

Thanks again Zack. I have forged Mizuno irons and someone local who can bend them for me. I also see that Lag has a set of woods listed. I will see how much he asking for them.

Would you say the irons should be bent to somewhere around 3-5 degrees flat?

Mine are about 6 or 7 degrees of today’s standard… I also had a set of mizunos that I bent before I got a vintage set of powerbilts, but when I had them bent that flat it added offset… Which is a common problem when bending… Make sure whoever is bending them that they do it right so there isn’t added offset… Lag told me how to bend it the right way… You have to bend the clubs more upright at first from high on the hosel and bend them towards you (sort of upright with a hook face), and then grip low on the hosel and bend it flat and weak ( by pushing away from you)… kind of complicated, but it puts the hosel in the right spot with relation to the leading edge.

And as for how flat to go… I would reccommend you use Lag’s spec with regards to loft and lie as well as weight (most importantly dead weight, not just swing weight) … Lag has his spec on here if you look for them… I’m not sure which thread it’s in… Mine are set up now exactly like his and it’s helped my swing so much!

Zack

Wow. I’m not sure I would trust the guy I use. I may see if Lag will bend them for me to make sure they are done right. This is all still very new to me and I dont mind paying a little extra in shipping, etc. to get it done right the first time.

Once again, thanks for the information.

Hi twomasters and Co,

G’day from Brizzie, down under.

Just an intro from another high hcp looking to improve. Played my first game of golf 15 years ago and probably played 5 times a year in those first 11 years, but it wasn’t until 4 years ago that I got myself a handicap and tried to play once a week. Current hcp of 17, had a lesson 2 years ago and my hcp went up instead of down. Frustrating game when scores vary from 85 to 105 every week and losing balls in hazards.
Stumbled across a thread on Lag’s golf machine, reading what ABS is all about and here I am preparing to start work on Module 1.

My goal from first 3 Modules is (time frame 6-12 mths)

  1. hit average 10 out 14 fairways
  2. hit average 12 out 18 GIR
  3. if the first two are achieved then i’m in golfing nirvana, i don’t care about the score.

Love this site, your stories and everyone’s input, wish I came across this site 4 years ago.

3iron

welcome three iron! get ready to become one with the bag!

enjoy, this is a great place and lots of great information on the forums.

Kirk

Welcome to ABS 3iron! You have come to the right place.

A few things I have learned after 7 weeks in Mod. 1:

hands - sore
wrists - sore
forearms - sore
duct tape makes a great band aid
golf swing - improving every day

Something that was suggested to me when i started, and cant stress enough is to get ABS spec gear as soon as possible. As a matter of fact, if I was “Lag for a day” I would make it a requirement for training.

Good luck and feel free to ask any questions.

jwb

thanks for the welcome guys.
jwb, i asked a pro shop to bend my titleist dci 962, to lag’s specs but they could only flatten the lie by 3 degrees for fear of damaging the hosel, which means 3 iron went from 60 to 57 degrees only and so forth. I wanted a heavier set for the feel factor so looked around for a set of vintage clubs and bought an old set of Macgregor MTR2 (2-9 iron). It certainly ‘feels’ heavier compared to the DCI, but I have no scales to actually measure the difference, anyway I was able to get these bent to Lag’s full specs. I take my hat off to those that can flush a 2 iron.

Also purchased a RAM persimmon to replace my Titleist 975D driver. The head is about 3/4 the size of 975D but a miss hit on the persimmon cost me plenty in distance, there’s no masking a good drive from a lucky one. Hopefully training and playing with the better gear will continue to improve my game.

3iron

Sounds like your off to a great start 3iron. The MTR2’s will serve you well. Before you know it, you will be changing your screen name to 2iron!

Bradley . Grest playing so far in the Heritage Classic if you can give US some updates on the course, scoring, conditions and how you go to 9 under

I followed Bradley yesterday subsequent to his 67 first day round (16 greens in rgulation). On day two he hit the first 7 greens in regulation and two putted. On the 8th he hit a great shot but it caught a down hill slope at the front of the green and kicked just of the back of the green and he did not get up and down for his only bogey for the first 36 holes. From that point he played memorable golf on this Jack Nicklaus designed course in very difficult windy conditions. His control of the ball was an example to his long and high hitting younger partners who could not control the ball anything like Bradley.

He currently is 2nd 3 off the lead.

For those interested here is a link that should allow progress for those interest.

I hope to get to see the last day but it is a considerable 2 hour drive to get there. I do however like watching great ball striking and control which Bradley seems to deliver in such an effortless way. I think the conditions will be a little less demanding for the last 2 days.

Bradley,

When you got the bad swing advice in the 90s and started changing your swing, how did you go about making the changes? Did your instructors give you certain drills to work on or were they just trying to get you to do different things when you swung, and it just starting changing gradually over time?

Yes hitting ball drills
I made thousands of backswings with my left foot back behind my right foot and I hit thousands of balls with my right foot back behind my left foot. This was designed to get a steep shoulder turn back and thru. Worst thing I ever did as I just became a pivot stalling hand roller because my body had nowhere to go.
I didnt know!!! I was just doing what I was told to do. I knew it felt wrong but didnt question it as it was from a reputable coach who also happened to be one of my best friends. From that moment on golf became much harder for me. Every day I woke up knowing I had to grind balls to try make ‘this idea’ work.
This experience really helped me understand that what Lag & myself inform our students to do is correct and is based on actuals and not guesswork fads or misrepresented science

For Australian ABS followers:
This coming Sunday April 14 at 1pm eastern on Channel 9 there is a package show from the recent Victorian Open event that I played well in.
The show is called “Life is Greener”
Early in the year I agreed to have cameras follow me around throughout that event. Was good timing that I played well also!! The show details the week in the life of a golf pro. I had cameras film some practice, range warm ups, waking up and breakfast on the early Thursday round, interview in the car on the way to the course, post round interviews and thoughts, Friday night barbecue at the house we rented- lots of different things
The show also follows Kim Felton who I coach and who I stayed with that week (5 of us rented a house for the week) and a few other golfers doing different things - wine tasting, AFL training, stunt plane ride etc etc. i believe the women will be featured also as the mens and womens event were run concurrently at the same venue for the 4 rounds.
I havent seen the finished product as yet so hopefully it comes out good and gives a little insight into tournament golf from a different perspective.
