I’m not a huge fan of too much caddy involvement, but here’s how the discussion should have gone over the second shot- an aside, he got the luckiest break of all time to actually have a second shot after hitting his drive sideways(it makes me wonder about the power of the psyche… deep down did he actually ‘want’ to win?..)
Caddy: Hey, Jean, do you want to win the British Open today?
Jean: Oui
Caddy: Well here’s your wedge and your putter, hack your way up to the green there and take your two putts, I’m off with your bag and the rest of your clubs and I’ll meet you up top for the presentation.
Jean: Merci
Caddy: You’re welcome. Though you should actually thank Doc Brown and his Flux Capacitor
Payne Stewart 1999 US Open Champion only a few months before he lost his life in an airplane crash…I rate this the greatest final hole putt for ‘Victory’ in a major I have witnessed
LEE ELDER wins in a playoff for his first tour victory and thus gains entry to the US Masters… the first time a man of color was accepted to play the event
The story goes that Elder received hate mail and death threats and during Masters week rented 2 houses near the course and moved around from house to house to protect himself and never ate without a horde of friends around him for fear of the threats.
These two guys look like Francis Ouimet and his caddy Eddie Lowery. For those that don’t know who Francis Ouimet is, he was an U.S. Amateur who won the 1913 U.S. Open against Harry Vardon and Ted Ray at age 20. Go watch Disney’s “The Greatest Game Ever Played” if you haven’t yet. Its a great movie!
